Jerry Coons Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. is the early leader in the 2006 USAC National
Sprint Car standings heading into this Sunday’s “7th Glen Niebel Classic”
featuring the Banjo Liquid Products 100 at the Anderson (
Ind.

Coons wheeled the Kroger/Tide, Bounty/Pringles F-5/Mopar to victory in
Saturday night’s 30-lap “Don Branson/Jud Larson Classic” at the Eldora
Speedway in
Rossburg
,
Ohio
, leading a 1-2 team sweep. Teammate and fast qualifier Tracy Hines finished
second and was followed by Dave Darland, Jay Drake and Kevin Huntley.
Coons led all 30 laps for the victory and leads Hines by one point going
into Sunday’s 100-lap contest at the 1/4-mile paved
Anderson
oval.
Just as he was at Eldora, Jay Drake is the defending champion at
Anderson
, having won last year’s “Glen Niebel Classic.” Drake is fourth in the
current standings after his fourth-place Eldora finish.
Darland, who ranks third in the points, holds the one-lap
Anderson
qualifying record of 11.360 seconds drivers will be aiming at Sunday.
USAC Western Sprint Car Champion Kody Swanson of
Kingsburg
,
Calif.
is among entrants for Sunday’s race. Swanson is the son of supermodified
standout Mike Swanson. Kody scored six podium finishes in a dozen starts last
season.
