VENUE CHANGE SENDS SPRINTS, MIDGETS TO VIRGINIA
SOUTHAMPTON, NOT NORTH WILKESBORO NOW HOSTS JUNE RACES
|
February 23, 2006...
“Virginia is for Sprinters” is a new motto for USAC’s “Thunder & Lightning” series as the Sprint Cars are headed to Southampton (Va.) Motor Speedway June 21 as a result of a venue change by the race organizers. The USAC National Midget Car Series are also on the “doubleheader” card at the 4/10-mile high-banked asphalt tri-oval.
Originally slated to compete at the North Wilkesboro Speedway, which has been idle for nearly a decade, the two series are now slated to compete at the track located in Capron, Va., about one hour south of Richmond.
The event will precede by two nights the appearance of the Sprint Cars at Richmond International Raceway.
The races will mark only the fourth and fifth times the Sprint Cars have visited the “Old Dominion State.” Tracy Hines won the inaugural outing at South Boston Speedway in 2001, while Jason McCord and Ron Gregory won races at Richmond in 2004 and 2005. The National Midgets have also competed in Virginia five times. Rich Vogler won a race at the Scope Arena in Norfolk in 1977, while Kenny Irwin Jr. scored a win at Richmond in 1996 and Tony Stewart, Teddy Beach and Aaron Fike own wins at South Boston.
Feature event distances at Southampton will be 30 laps, while a 60-lap Sprint feature is on tap at Richmond. The USAC Silver Crown cars share the “SunTrust Indy Challenge” weekend at Richmond with the USAC Sprint Cars and the Indy Racing League.
