Marysville, CA - August 12, 2006...
Tony Richards
of Paradise won the Hot August Night 25 Saturday night at Twin Cities
Speedway. Joel Giusti made a slick pass on the last lap to snare the TCS
MiniStock feature and Yuba City’s Phillip Shelby won in the TCS Stock
Cars.
Richards
parlayed his front row start with some heroic driving on TCS’s deep,
hook-up cushion to win a stirring feature event. Ryan McDaniel took a run at
Richards from his third row starting position by lap ten and the race was
on! Richards and McDaniel were spectacular as the high-flying pair
negotiated the quick quarter mile.
Hunt Magneto
Wingless Sprint Car point leader Charlie Marrs found third quickly and was
never able to close in on the lead duo. Richards’ yellow #76 got a big
wake up call at halfway when McDaniel tried a high side pass in three. It
didn’t work and Richards got back up on the wheel. He pulled to a three
car length lead in the next two circuits. Then, as Richards exited turn two
with five to go he hooked the cushion and it straightened out the car.
McDaniel pounced and flashed past Richards.
Richards would
not be denied, however, and began to bury his car into the cushion and
hustled after McDaniel. With two to go McDaniel was straightened up in
exactly the same spot as was Richards a few laps before. Richards had a
monster run going coming out of two at precisely the same instant. He
powered on by and into a lead he would not give up. Marrs stayed third under
Tim Dillon’s checkered flag.
Richards was
ecstatic with the victory worth $1000.00. Richards’ fourth victory of the
season was perhaps his best.
Joel Giusti is
still in the hunt. As evidenced by his remarkable last lap pass of point
leader Mike Merritt, Giusti still has his eyes on the crown. The TCS
MiniStock race was a thriller from start to finish.
The early laps
provided young James Foster with his best chance yet of putting a win on the
board. Foster was the class of the field as he led Merritt, Giusti and Shane
Stoker with relative ease. Then the quartet approached lapped traffic.
Foster’s lead evaporated and the three drivers behind him pressed hard.
Coming off of
four a slow car changed lines, and caused Foster to react abruptly and he
was hit from behind. The blue #3 snapped sideways and spun through the
infield bringing out the caution flag. Merritt inherited the lead. Foster
was relegated to the rear. He made a terrific charge through the field only
to be involved in a front stretch altercation in the final laps.
After Foster
was gone Merritt kept the other racers at bay. With three to go Giusti
started to look high and low for a way around Merritt. Merritt held his line
and a little more making his car as wide as possible. As the white banner
flew Giusti inched his way up the inside of Merritt. These two talented
racers were giving it their all. In turn one it was MiniStock racing at
it’s finest. Giusti squeezed out a lead off of two and held on to the
finish. Merritt was second and Stoker was third with a fast closing Lisa
Shelby in fourth.
Young Philip
Shelby gave notice that the point race is far from over in the TCS Stock
Cars. Shelby and Billy Knoop have been slugging out all season long and
Saturday night was no exception. Not only did Shelby score a win over his
closest rival, he also snared an additional $100 in his heat race courtesy
of Turk’s Smog and Auto repair in Yuba City.
Shelby got to
the front early and stayed there repelling Knoop’s charges one by one.
Brad Magenheimer and Mike Meyer followed across the finish line in third and
fourth.
Livermore’s
Tony Gaoiran posted another easy victory in the SORA Sprint 100 feature.
The TCS winged
Pacific Sprint Cars will return this Saturday night. The Hunt Wingless
Sprint Cars, the TCS Stock Cars and the Nor Cal Dwarf Cars will round out
the four division program. Gates
open at 5 with racing scheduled for 7 PM.
