October 14th Santa Maria Speedway Recap |

Santa Maria, CA - October 14, 2006...Forty-seven Bandit/VRA Grand Slam Sprint Cars and twenty Mini Stocks invaded Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night for the season ending 21st Annual Bud Stanfield Memorial. Danny Sheridan started the evening on a sour note, spinning on his first lap of qualifying. The Santa Maria driver redeemed himself on his second lap, timing in fourth in the order. Kerman's Davey Pombo set fast time of 14.844, averaging just over 80 miles-per-hour. Sheridan went on to win the 40-lap "A" main event while Pombo crashed out of the feature, flipping into the turn three wall six laps from the end, while running fourth. Sheridan passed Greg Porte, of San Luis Obispo, on the 13th circuit and went on to the victory. Camarillo's Josh Ford came home second, followed by Porte, Jimmy Thompson, of Grover Beach, and Chris Wakim of Simi Valley. Jimmy Crawford, of Ventura, placed 13th in the "A" main which was good enough to clinch the Bandit/VRA Grand Slam championship. Rusty Carlile, of Bakersfield, and Jayson May, of Taft, won the 12-lap "B" main events and 8-lap heat races were taken by Porte, Ford, Visalia's Jesse Mack, Reseda's Tom Harper and Santa Maria's Mike Knopf. Unofficially, Nipomo's Jeff Fiscus lost the local Bandit Sprint Car championship to Santa Maria's Steve DeMott when his car failed to fire after several attempts and he put a borrowed ride in the back chute wall during a heat race. Ken Kehs, of Arroyo Grande, secured second place in the Mini Stock championship with an 8-lap heat race and a 20-lap main event victory. Santa Maria's Frank Nyback and Rob Gilbertson were second and third in the feature, followed by Nipomo's Justin Marsh and 2006 Mini Stock title holder Andrew Greiman of Camarillo.
