Santa Maria, CA - September 9, 2006...Century
21 Hometown Realty Late Model Stocks, Bandit Sprint Cars, Factory Stocks and
Mini Stocks were in action Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.
Mike Johnson did just what he had to do to
take back the point lead in the Late Model Stock division. The Lompoc driver set
fast time of 15.745 seconds, 76 mph average, won an 8-lap heat race and the
25-lap main event to score the maximum 55 points for the night. Buena Park's
Billy Griffin had the lead by a point going into the night, but mehanical
problems in the feature event dropped him to a last place finish and third in
points behind Santa Maria's Rick Coffey who finished third in the main behind
Johnson and Lompoc's Dana Beattie. Devin Crockett, of Arroyo Grande, was fourth
and Donnie Hampl, of Atascadero, fifth. Griffin captured the other heat race.
Visalia's Jesse Mack was the victor in the
25-lap Bandit Sprint Car main event after a two car duel with point leader Jeff
Fiscus, of Nipomo, who passed Mack for the lead on lap 7 and held it until lap
17 before Mack took the top spot back for good. Fiscus was second, followed by
Santa Maria's Steve DeMott and San Luis Obispo's Greg Porte, who set fast time
of 14.567 second, just over 77 miles-per-hour. Jayson May of Taft placed fifth
while 8-lap heat race wins went to Mack and Fiscus.
Tom Renner, of Nipomo, won his first
20-lap Factory Stock feature event of the season but Santa Maria's Glen Sparks
was second to stretch his point lead over Santa Maria's Kirk Morgan who spun
himself out of a top-three finish, coming home ninth. Bill Pinette, Santa Maria;
Doyle Graham, Jr., Grover Beach; and, Michael Frazier, Santa Maria, filled out
the top-five. Eight-lap heat race wins were taken by Renner and Sparks.
Mini Stocks also ran a 20-lap main event
and it was Mike Leland, of Atascadero, finishing on top after being denied his
first career main event victory on the final lap, earlier in the season, by
point leader Andrew Greiman of Camarillo. Santa Maria's Frank Nyback, Ventura's
Jim Evans and Arroyo Grande's Ken Kehs followed Leland to the chekered flag.
Greiman placed fifth and captured and 8-lap heat race with the other heat going
to Kehs.
Next Saturday night Bandit Sprint Cars,
IMCA Modifieds, Fox 11 First at Ten Street Stocks and Mini Stocks will take to
the 1/3-mile oval.
Spectator gates open at three, with
qualifying at five and racing at six. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of
the 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
