410 Sprint Cars, NMRA TQ Midgets, WRA Vintage Midgets & Sprints and Mini
Stocks entertained race fans Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.
Rip Williams came from the outside of the second row to capture
the 30-lap USAC/CRA Sprint Car "A" main event with Blake Miller
placing second. The two Yorba Linda drivers finished ahead of Santa Maria's
Danny Sheridan who led for a time but was relegated to third at the checkers.
Tony Jones, of Norco, and Williams' teammate Matt Mitchell, of Yorba Linda,
rounded out the top-five. David Cardey, of Riverside, won the 12-lap
"B" main event and Concord's Damion Gardner, Scotts Valley's Evan
Suggs and Mitchell captured 10-lap heats. Ventura's Cory Kruseman set fast time
of 13.911 seconds, averaging over 85 miles-per-hour.
Ron Ahrendt, of Harbor City, began the evening for the NMRA TQ
Midget division by averaging just over 75 mph to set fast time for the second
time in-a-row with a 15.960 clocking. Oxnard's Chris Hedge came out on top in
the 25-lap feature event, with West Evans, of Moorpark, second and Kenny Wiley,
of Sunland, third. Fourth went to Chuck West, of Clovis, and Ahrent finished
fifth. Evans and Scott Dobson, of Newbury Park, won 8-lap heat races.
Camarillo's Andrew Greiman visited victory circle for the fifth
time this season to further extend his point lead in the Mini Stock division
after their 20-lap feature. Santa Maria's Frank Nyback came home second with
Lompoc's Paul Terrones third. Atascadero drivers Mike Leland and Ryan Stolz were
fourth and fifth. Nyback and Matt Sweeney, of Van Nuys, were winners in 8-lap
heat race action.
WRA Vintage Midgets & Sprint entertained fans with two
exhibition runs in their finely restored race cars, most of which are 50 years
old, or older.
Next Saturday night the track will be dark but racing will
return the following night, Sunday, September 3, with the running of the 16th
Annual Don Roberts Stock Car Grand Prix. Century 21 Hometown Realty presents the
Western Dirt Late Model Tour featuring a 50 lap main event sponsored locally by
Saturn of Santa Maria. Fox 11 First at Ten Street Stocks will go up against
Bakersfield Super Streets in a 50 lap East vs. West Shootout event and Factory
Stocks will run a 20 lap feature.
Spectator gates open at three, with qualifying at five and
racing at six. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange
on Hutton Road.
