July 1st Santa Maria Speedway Recap
by Jim Pluhar

Santa Maria, CA - July 1, 2006...SMS Bandit Sprint Cars, Santa Maria vs. Bakersfield East/West Shootout Series Street Stocks, IMCA Modifieds and Mini Stocks provided plenty of fireworks Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.

Jason May, of Taft, jumped into the lead at the start of the 25-lap Sprint Car main event and was never headed. Opening night winner Jesse Mack, of Visalia, hounded May but could not find an opportunity to pass as May protected the bottom line. Bakersfield's Rusty Carlile placed third, followed by Santa Maria drivers Jimmy Thompson and Thad Bennett. May and Greg Porte, of San Luis Obispo, won the 8-lap heat races and Thompson set fast time of 14.853 seconds for an average speed of over 80 mph.

The Street Stock 30-lap East/West feature event found four Santa Maria drivers in the top-five, led by Kenny Kirkpatrick, of Nipomo. Lee Jensen, of Bakersfield, broke up a Santa Maria sweep by finishing second, with Billy "The Kid" Simkins, who, ironically, lives in Bakersfield but races at SMS, placing third. Tim Randolph and Tom Breshears, both of Santa Maria, were fourth and fifth. Simkins, Randolph and Rich Denman, of Coalinga, captured 8-lap heat races and Simkins set fast time of 17.100 seconds, averaging 70 mph.

A fourth lap collision on the front chute in the 25-lap IMCA Modified main event led to the second win of the season for Laton's Jimmy Reeves. Reeves jumped to the lead on the restart and pulled slowly away from the rest of the field for the victory. Watsonville's Todd Hermosillo was second, followed by Santa Maria's Tim Breshears, Ojai's Randy McGraw and Santa Maria's Jacob Jones who won the last Modified feature at the Speedway. Reeves and Hermosillo won 8-lap heat races.

Mike Weigel, of Lompoc, led all 20 laps of the Mini Stock feature event, from the pole, for his first victory of 2006. Weigel staved off repeated challenges by point leader Andrew Greiman, of Camarillo, who has won two of the four main events this season and finished second in the other two. Frank Nyback, of Santa Maria, was third, with Atascadero's Mike Leland fourth and Arroyo Grande's Ken Kehs completing the top-five. Eight-lap heat races were won by Nyback and Nipomo's Chris Harwin.

Next Saturday night Century 21 Hometown Realty presents the Western Dirt Late Model Tour, IMCA Modifieds, Factory Stocks and CDCRA Dwarf Cars.

Spectator gates open at three, with qualifying at five and racing at six. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the U.S. 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.
