Santa Maria, CA - June 24, 2006...SMS Bandit Sprint
Cars, Fox 11 First at Ten Street Stock, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks raced the
1/3-mile oval Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.
Jeff Fiscus, of Los Osos, had one of the best nights of his Sprint Car racing
career, setting fast time of 14.205 seconds, for an average speed of nearly 85
miles-per-hour, and going on to win the 25-lap main event. Starting outside the
second row, Fiscus grabbed the lead when Jimmy Thompson, of Grover Beach, got
out-of-shape at the drop of the green, heading for turn one. Thompson recovered
to place third behind Atascadero's Joey Layman who was unable to overtake
Fiscus. Fourth place went to Patrick Frisco, of Paso Robles, and fifth to Greg
Porte of San Luis Obispo. Thompson and Taft's Jason May captured 8-lap heat
races.
The 25-lap Street Stock feature was another two-car battle between Bakersfield's
Billy Simkins and Santa Maria's Tim Randolph. In their first run of the season,
June 10, it was Simkins first, Randolph second. This time it was Randolph first
and Simkins second, giving Tim the point lead by one marker. Elton Shaffer, of
Santa Maria, scored a third, followed by Santa Marians Chris Kearns and Tom
Breshears. Breshears and Randolph won 8-lap heat races.
The Factory Stocks showed up with 21 cars for their third run of the season.
Santa Maria's Kirk Morgan bettered his runner-up finish in their last 20-lap
main event to win the race and an 8-lap heat race. Tim Bennett, Santa Maria; Les
Vogt, Arroyo Grande; Dale Sylvester, Arroyo Grande; and Doyle Graham, Jr.,
Grover Beach, filled out the top-five. Vogt won the other heat race.
The Mini Stocks also ran a 20-lap feature event and it was point leader Andrew
Greiman, of Camarillo, capturing his second feature win of the season. Ken Kehs,
of Arroyo Grande, ran a strong second with Lompoc's Mike Weigel third. Santa
Barbara's Ben Caswell finished fourth and Santa Maria's Wade Bognuda was awarded
fifth when Atascadero's Mike Leland was DQed for the night. Eight-lap heat races
were captured by Greiman and Weigel.
Next Saturday night 360 Bandit Sprint Cars, Street Stock and Mini Stocks return,
joined by I.M.C.A. Modifieds. Admission prices are: Adults - $14.00, Seniors
(65+) - $10.00, Children 6 to 12 - $3.00, under 6 free.
Spectator gates open at 3:00 p.m., with qualifying at 5:00 p.m. and racing at
6:00 p.m. The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the U.S. 101/166 interchange
on Hutton Road.
