KAEDING, TYLER CONTINUE SEESAW SILVER
CROWN BATTLE AFTER ORP, TERRE HAUTE RACES
|
August 7, 2006...INDIANAPOLIS - Bud Kaeding and Brian Tyler continued
their seesaw battle in the USAC Silver Crown Series presented by K&N
Engineering point standings over the weekend, each taking a victory in the two
races run and each
holding lead.
Tied atop the standings heading into last Thursday's "J.D. Byrider
100" at O 'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, Tyler stole the thunder the
first time, winning the 100-lap race in the No. 21 Kroger/Bounty Pringles/Tide
C&R/Chevy for his second victory of the season. Tyler took the lead on Lap
39 after making contact with then leader Josh Wise, then withstood a powerful
charge by NASCAR Nextel Cup Series driver Carl Edwards for the win.
Edwards, whose arm restraint got caught in the steering wheel while attempting
to take the lead causing him to get sideways before saving the car, finished
second, with two-time reigning series champion Dave Steele third, Aaron Pierce
fourth and Bryn Gohn fifth.
Kaeding finished 11th after ignition problems ended his night after 34 laps.
Then Kaeding stole the lead right back in Saturday's "SUMAR Classic"
at the Terre Haute Action Track in Indiana, after a stunning battle with Hoosier
hotshoe Shane Cottle. Kaeding and Cottle traded the lead nine times among
themselves, with Kaeding ultimately prevailing after passing Cottle for the
final time on Lap 82 of the race, which featured 12 overall lead changes, 19
cautions and two red flag periods.
Trailing Kaeding and Cottle were Levi Jones, Dickie Gaines and Tom Capie. The
dozen lead changes, which included a bout with polesitter John Heydenreich, was
a series record for the series on dirt, and three short of the all-time series
record, set in 1999 at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill.
Tyler suffered his misfortune at Terre Haute, when he was knocked out of the
event on Lap 9 after an accident.
The Terre Haute round was the first of three straight dirt races for the series,
which continues Aug. 19 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill.
