KAEDING WINS "RICHMOND
TIMES-DISPATCH 100"; MILESTONE EVENT JULY 7 AT CHICAGOLAND
|
INDIANAPOLIS - Bud Kaeding turned an engine misfire Saturday at Richmond
International Raceway into a fiery streak, one that has made him the hottest
driver in the USAC Silver Crown Series presented by K&N Engineering.
The Campbell, Calif. driver has won the last two series races after holding off
Jay Drake in the "Richmond Times-Dispatch 100" at the
three-quarter-mile track in Richmond, Va., leading the final 24 laps and
extending his point lead heading into the July 7 race at Chicagoland Speedway in
Joliet, Ill., the 300th event in series history.
Kaeding - whose lead blossomed to 21 points - was one of four leaders on the
day, and the third of those four to encounter some kind of mechanical trouble
while holding onto the point.
Polesitter Josh Wise led the first 19 laps before a throttle linkage problem
sent him into the pits, but the Riverside, Calif. made it back out to finish
fifth. Two-time defending champion and race winner Dave Steele suffered engine
failure late in the race while leading. Brian Tyler was the other race leader;
he led until Kaeding took over on Lap 77.
Wise was awarded the pole - the third straight race for him he has started there
- after Friday's qualifications were rained out.
Pete Shepherd III was involved in the only accident of the race, as he slammed
into the front stretch wall on Lap 91 due to mechanical failure. The Canadian
driver climbed out of the car under his own power, and later said the car
withstood the impact due to the way it was constructed.
