SILVER CROWN SERIES READY TO TACKLE
HOMESTEAD SATURDAY
|
March 22, 2006...INDIANAPOLIS - USAC's Silver Crown Series
presented by K&N Engineering will make history Saturday as its new
generation cars tackle the 1.5-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway in southern
Florida.
Fourteen car/driver combinations are pre-entered for the "Silver Crown
100" and will try to become the first winners in a Silver Crown Series race
on a track larger than 1.25 miles. Gateway International Raceway is currently
the biggest track the series has competed on in its 36-year history.
Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. leads the point standings by virtue of his
season-opening triumph in January at Phoenix International Raceway. Steele -
second on the all-time series victory list with 15 - has won five of the last
six Silver Crown pavement races and was one of the fastest drivers in February's
Hoosier Tire test at Homestead, one of three tests for the new generation cars.
Joining Steele will be a host of veterans and newcomers, including Phoenix
runner-up Bud Kaeding, Steele's teammate Brian Tyler, 2004 series Rookie of the
Year Aaron Pierce, and defending Most Improved Driver Wayne Reutimann Jr.
Newcomers include 2004 Indy Racing League Indy Pro Series champion Thiago
Medeiros and former CASCAR Rookie of the Year Peter Shepherd III, who last
season was among the 10 finalists in the Roush Racing Driver X competition. P.J.
Jones, a veteran of 12 Silver Crown Series races and the 2004 Indianapolis 500,
is also entered in C&R Racing's house car.
Drivers are expected to be turning overall lap speeds of over 165 mph, the
fastest in series history.
The four-day event commences with open testing Wednesday and Thursday, practice
Friday and Saturday and qualifying Saturday afternoon. The green flag for the
67-lap, 100-mile race is set to drop at 4:30 p.m.
