INDIANAPOLIS - The racing debut of the brand-new
pavement Silver Crown car, which has undergone extensive testing at existing
series venues as well as new venues involved in the 2006 series expansion, is
scheduled Jan. 21-22 as part of Phoenix International Raceway’s annual
“Copper World Classic.” The event kicks off an expanded slate of races,
announced today by the United States Auto Club, offering unprecedented prize
money for USAC Silver Crown Championship participants.
Series expansion has resulted in accelerated purse structures and
unprecedented exposure, with events occurring on “major” race weekends in
major market areas.
Pavement purse structures in 2006 will reflect significant increases,
including the $150,000 purse for most 1.5-mile ovals, based on 36-car,
100-mile race starting fields which will result in $25,000 first-place prizes
and a minimum of $2,200 in prize money for all starters. “Top-15”
finishers in these events will be racing for $3,000 in prizes or more.
Purses for “existing” Silver Crown pavement venues have been increased by
a minimum of $10,000. None of these stated purse figures include posted
accessory or other additional awards.
Brand-new venues joining the 2006 Silver Crown slate include Homestead-Miami
Speedway in Florida (March 25-26), Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky. (June 16),
Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill. (July 9), Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa
(Sept. 16), and Kansas Speedway near Kansas City (Sept. 30). The Chicagoland
and Kansas events will be held in conjunction with NASCAR Nextel Cup and Busch
Series weekends, while the Kentucky race is in conjunction with a NASCAR Busch
Series race and the Homestead-Miami race will complement the Indy Racing
League weekend. The event at the new Iowa Speedway is part of that track’s
debut weekend also featuring the Hooters Pro Cup Series.
“It has been extremely gratifying to be able to assemble a schedule
representative of the caliber of competition this series offers,” stated
USAC President/CEO Rollie Helmling. “Our target for the new pavement car has
been realized with the expanded opportunities this schedule presents for our
participants. We look forward to these new challenges and the exciting
competition which these new cars will generate.”
