Sept. 9 2006 -
Rusty Carlile stopped the Davey Pombo juggernaut at Kings Speedway Saturday
night when he received the checkers for the first time this season. Carlile took
advantage of Pombo's bad luck when the latter's car came to a stop on the main
straightaway, just a lap and one half short from yet another victory.
Pombo, whose juggernaut included three previous main event victories and a
win in the evening's Heat and Dash, appeared headed for a sweep and another big
payoff as he led throughout the majority of the 30-lapper, although Carlile was
challenging for the lead as the two raced through heavy lapped-traffic. As the
white flag was about to be displayed, the leader's car coasted to a stop. What
would have happened if Pombo's machine continued is anyone's guess, a question
never to be answered.
With the yellow flag displayed for the removal of Pombo's car, the field
bunched up for a two-lap shootout. Point leader Jonathan Logan lined up directly
behind Carlile's machine, followed by hometown favorite Chad Boespflug and
consistent Andy Ferris. When the green flag reappeared, Carlile jumped out to a
three car-length lead and won easily but eyes then shifted to Boespflug as he
attempted to pass his Hanford rival Logan on the final circuit. It wasn't to be
however, as all four cars finished in the order of the restart. Derrick Hearron,
who captured his heat race, finished a strong fifth, his best performance of the
season.
Pombo jumped into the early lead from his pole position, out-gunning Richard
Harvey Jr. as they headed into turn one. Before one lap could be recorded in the
books however, Harvey's previous bad luck reappeared and the veteran pulled off
the racing surface with a broken rocker-arm. The problem had been discovered
prior to the start of the main and although minor repairs were accomplished, the
ability to run the full 30 was always in doubt.
Pombo, who ran away from the field two weeks ago, didn't enjoy the same
domination this time as the hot challengers were never more than 25 yards
behind, biding their time until the later portion of the event. Lapped traffic
might have entered into the outcome as Pombo found it difficult to maneuver
through, allowing Carlile and Logan to close swiftly, hoping to pounce on the
leader's difficulties. It all became a moot point when Pombo's misfortune
occurred. His vocal fans moaned while Carlile's support group cheered.
Sixteen cars checked through the pit gate and raced against the clock in
qualifying. Boespflug had quick time, and as mentioned earlier, Hearron and
Pombo took top honors in the heat races. With only the October 6/7 Dirt
Nationals remaining on the SCRA point schedule, Logan maintains his slight lead
over Carlile, 752 to 703. Although Harvey took a slight 'hit' in the points, he
remains third with 589.
