LOGAN TOPS WILLIAMS IN THRILLER
by Dan Fleischer

August 5, 2006 - Chowchilla Speedway...In one of the most exciting main events of the season, Jonathan Logan outlasted Steven Williams to capture his second SCRA 360 c.i. feature of the season at Chowchilla Speedway (CA) on Saturday, August 5th. Starting from the outside of the front row, Logan battled pole sitter Williams, who was making only his second sprint car event since recovering from a broken collar bone, for the first 17 laps of the 30-lap main. The pair ran nose-to-tail and side-by-side as they fought their way through heavy traffic, resembling a two-car trophy dash.

On lap 18, while encountering lapped cars, Logan used a "pick" to take the lead but Williams didn't throw in the towel. He rode the bumper of Logan's machine as the laps wound down, seeking a way to regain the lead. That almost occurred on lap 26 as the two leaders came upon a group of six lapped cars battling for positions sixth through 12th.

As Logan approached the stripe and the group of cars, he was forced to hit the "binders," almost coming to a stop. Williams saw the opening and dove to the inside looking to take advantage of Logan's difficulties; however, he rode over the wheel a slower car, became airborne momentarily before landing on all fours and continuing on. That gave Logan the breathing room he needed to navigate the remaining four laps en route to the victory. Williams crossed the line three car lengths back.

While the battle up front was being waged, Rusty Carlile and Andy Ferris were putting on a show of their own. The pair started from row number two and put on their own clinic, battling throughout in an attempt to finish on the podium run down the leaders. They settled for third and fourth when flagman Lee Jaskowiak displayed the checkers.
After failing to transfer directly to the main in his heat, Richard Harvey was relegated to starting ninth, but methodically worked his way through traffic to finish a creditable fifth.
Heat winners were David Press and Logan, while Williams captured his first Dash of the season. Ferris set quick time in qualifying at 15.562 seconds.
