July 7, 2006 - Watsonville, CA...After a lengthy 'vacation' from
the Sprint Car Racing Association (SCRA), Davey Pombo returned to the 360 c.i.
division and ran away from the competition to win the 30-lap main event at Ocean
Speedway in Watsonville, CA. The Fresno resident hopped into the car driven in
previous races by cousin Albert. Rusty Carlile jumped into the lead from his outside front row position and led the field for a good portion of the going until Pombo, who started a distant seventh, worked his magic, passing car after car to ride Carlile's tail. Once he slipped by, it was 'Katie bar the door,' no contest. The top five finishers were Pombo, 'Cowboy' Smith, Kurt Nelson, Andy Ferris and Davey Key, who started a very distant 13th. En route to the lead, Pombo passed a rather strong contingent of competitors including Smith, Nelson, Jeff Delte, Evan Suggs and Jonathan Logan. The latter two produced the best racing of the evening as they battled side by side throughout the event, finally finishing sixth and seventh respectively. At one point of the race, Nelson rode over the wheel of Delte, became airborne and almost landed on the latter's roll cage. An enraged Delte climbed from his damaged car, walked to the track and almost threw his steering wheel at Nelson, ala NASCAR. However, he thought better of the idea and walked away. Heat winners were Pombo, Harvey and David Press while Delte captured the Dash, which was a barn-burner. Delte, Carlile and Nelson ran as if they were tied together and as they exited turn four looking for the checkered, it was anybody's race. Delte received Lee Jaskowiak's black and white ahead of other two. After winning his heat, Harvey encountered another bout with lady luck, but all bad. A huge rock broke a brake line, sidelining him at the beginning of the main. It marked the third time at this track that the veteran was unable to make or finish the feature.
