GRAND SLAM DRAWS 14 SCRA ENTRIES

by Dan Fleischer

May 23 2006 The first of four Grand Slam events attracted 14 SCRA 360 sprint cars to Bakersfield Speedway (CA) on Saturday, May 20. Heading the list of veteran, member drivers were Rusty Carlile, Evan Suggs and Richard Harvey Jr.
Unfortunately, the entire contingency of participants was greeted by a poorly prepared track. Early on, the track became dry and slick and by main event time, the dust was so prevalent, the fans couldn’t see the cars and, as a matter of fact, neither could the other drivers. For the most part, it was a follow-the-leader evening with only one groove, up against the cushion.
Carlile fared the best of the SCRA boys as he finished a respectable 10th in the 30-lap main, with Suggs coming home in 16th. Others participating during the evening included Todd Hunsaker, Matt Day, Richard Brace, Tony Everhart, Brian Schuler, Alberto Pombo, Jonathan Logan, Daniel Hood, Brandon Thomas, Jim Thompson and Kevin Barnes.
Ventura Racing Association’s (VRA) Michael Trimble won the 30-lap feature, with Greg Taylor and Jimmy Crawford taking the other podium positions.
SCRA points were awarded to Hunsaker and Carlile, who qualified third and fourth respectively, and to Suggs, Hunsaker and Carlile for their strong finishes in the heat races. Semi points were awarded to Day, Brace, Everhart, Harvey, Schuler, Pombo, Logan and Barnes. The big point winners for the evening were Carlile, who garnered a total of 33 for his efforts, and Suggs, who tallied a total of 21.
By virtue of the points he garnered, Suggs jumped into the SCRA season-long point standings with 152, followed by ageless Brent Kaeding (148), who was committed to the GSC event at nearby Tulare. Carlile moved into third (136) while Peter Murphy (128) and Andy Ferris (113), who were not on-hand, dropped to fourth and fifth respectively.
The “Wingless Warriors” make the long trip to American Valley Speedway in Quincy, CA on June 3rd for their next outing.
