Shepherd Scores Top 8 Finish at Kentucky |

Sparta, Ky. – June 19, 2006 – With team owner and mentor, Carl Edwards looking on, rookie Peter Shepherd drove the No. 199 Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing Ford powered C&R Silver Crown car to finish in the top ten for the second time in as many Silver Crown races Friday night at Kentucky Speedway. “I thought everything went well tonight,” smiled Shepherd. “The crew gave me a great car. I learned a lot about how to pass cars on a big track.” Peter Shepherd in his second career Silver Crown start qualified the car 7th quick. When the green flag dropped, Shepherd had moved up to 5th. Around lap 46, the Canadian felt a vibration and pulled into the pits for the team to have a look at the car. Immediately, they changed the blistered right rear tire and sent Shepherd on his way. The vibration continued so the rookie guided the No. 199 back down pit road again. “We didn’t want to put ourselves in a dangerous situation especially with our race next weekend at Richmond so we decided to bring it in,” said Shepherd. “Upon entering pit road, I looked down and the transmission had popped into neutral so I jammed it back into gear.” Shepherd continued down pit lane and back out onto the track. The rookie never got his head down. With coaching from team owner Carl Edwards, team Manager Chris Santucci and his spotter, the youngster continued to learn and grow as a driver finishing 8th. “Even though we didn’t win it, I think that I am bringing myself up to the level that the team is now and once we are at the top of the peak, I think we are going to make some noise.” GROUP MENTORING Peter Shepherd is soaking everything up like a sponge. The USAC rookie is leaning on his crew for information. Team Manager Chris Santucci is leading the instruction but crewmembers like Ricky Stenhouse, Robert Hubbard, Robert Gant and Tommy Bracken are also providing feedback. Carl Edwards and a volunteer spotter from Roush Racing provided on track instruction Friday night. Shepherd is using every opportunity to learn as much as he can. IF YOU ARE NOT TIRED, YOU DIDN”T DRIVE HARD EVERY LAP Peter Shepherd spent time with NASCAR veteran Joe Millikan last week, learning about what it takes to run at the top levels. Millikan finished 6th in Cup points ahead of Dale Earnhardt Sr. in 1979. “He said no matter where you race, you should be tired when you get out of the car,” said Shepherd. “If you are going hard, your body is going to be taking a beating if you drive it hard every lap. You know a Homestead it was the first time I was ever in a car where it felt like I didn’t give it everything I had. I can honestly walk out of here tonight and say I gave it everything I had.” USAC SILVER CROWN SERIES ON TV The Kentucky 100 is scheduled to air on the Outdoor Channel July 8 at 5pm Eastern time. The Outdoor Channel will air twelve, one-hour broadcasts this season with additional replays scheduled. Veteran racing broadcast icon, Jack Arute will call the race while Rob Klepper will handle the color commentary. Brienne Pedigo will report from pit lane.
