Homestead,
Fla. – March 25, 2006 – USAC newcomer Peter Shepherd accomplished the
Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing team’s goals this weekend USAC Silver
Crown Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Coming into the weekend, the
Canadian had only turned a handful of laps in an open cockpit Silver Crown car.
“The goal for us this weekend was to get Peter (Shepherd) as many laps as
possible and be there at the end of the race,” said Team Manager Chris
Santucci. “We wanted to build him up slow, which is what we did. I think he
improved every time he was in the car.”
Shepherd listened to his crew and communicated with them on what changes needed
to be made to the car. The team’s hard work was rewarded when Shepherd turned
a 31.429 second lap good for fourth quick during qualifying.
“Qualifying fourth was a major surprise,” smiled Santucci. “He said that
he felt the car had more in it and he was right. He made a believer out of us by
turning his best time of the weekend.”
From there, the Brampton, Ontario native started his first Silver
Crown™ race. The team’s game plan was to let their new student get a feel
for Silver Crown racing. With USAC veterans starting behind Shepherd, he knew
that things could get interesting. Peter Shepherd kept the No. 99 Carl Edwards/
R.E. Technologies Racing/ C&R/ Ford in the top ten for all 67 laps on the
1.5 mile oval, finishing seventh.
“I gained a lot of experience and being able to come out of here with a
seventh place finish is better than what I expected,” stated Shepherd.
Team Manager Chris Santucci had nothing but praise for his pupil.
“Peter is a good communicator and kept the car clean,” said Santucci. “I
think he gained a lot of respect in the USAC community this weekend with how he
drove the car. Some were surprised that he was in the car in the beginning but
by the end of the weekend they understood why he is in the car.”
“I
want to thank the crew,” said Shepherd. “The car was unbelievable. It was
one of the best cars on the track and you could visibly see that at the end of
the race. I was just happy to have a good finish today.”
PROFESSOR
TYLER TOPS THE FIELD
Peter
Shepherd leaned on several USAC veteran drivers this weekend. One of them, Brian
Tyler, set an excellent example of how to drive a new generation Silver Crown
car by coming from seventh to win the feature at Homestead today.
In addition to giving advice to Shepherd this weekend, Tyler also tutored the
Roush Racing Driver X competitor during practice in a 2003 Silver Crown car last
week at Memphis.
