Memphis,
Tenn. – January 18, 2006 – Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing will
begin their 6th season of USAC Silver Crown™ competition this
weekend at the Copper World Classic at Phoenix International Raceway. For the
first time in series history, the team and their competitors will challenge the
one-mile oval in their new generation Silver Crown cars. Carl Edwards/ R.E.
Technologies Racing traveled to the Indianapolis headquarters of C&R Racing
last week to put the car together for Phoenix. For team manager, Chris Santucci,
the choice of chassis manufacturer was easy.
“We did a lot of research looking at the different manufacturers and we
saw that the only builder for us was C&R Racing,” stated Santucci.
Santucci
observed the C&R test at Phoenix a few weeks ago and came away pleased.
“I
was impressed with the tests at Phoenix. The drivers said that they were
comfortable in the car. I have a lot of respect for Chris Paulsen and his
knowledge of racing.”
The
team selected veteran driver and Arizona native, Jerry Coons Jr. to pilot the
car on its maiden voyage.
“We
are looking forward to the opportunity of making the first race and getting a
feel for the car,” smiled Coons. “I think it is good to get in on the ground
floor of things and be there at the start of the series.”
Jerry
Coons tested a new generation Silver Crown car a few weeks ago at Phoenix. Coons
has spent more time behind the wheel driving for R.E. Technologies than any
other driver. His experience with the new car combined with his years of
communications with the team may determine the team’s success this weekend.
“Some
of the teams have been on the track and tested,” stated Coons. “We are going
to be a little bit behind the eight ball just getting the car done and getting
out there so every minute of track time is going to be critical but I am looking
forward to the challenge.”
The
Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing team will race with Ford engines under
the hood this weekend. Ford has powered USAC Silver Crown champions the past
four years.
DOUBLE
DUTY
Jerry Coons Jr. will be a busy man this weekend. Besides driving in the Silver
Crown division, Coons with begin his quest for the 2006 USAC National Midget
Series title. He finished second in 2005 splitting time with NASCAR veteran
Tracy Hines. His car owner, Wilke Pak, won the 2005 owners championship.
FRESH
BOWL OF CHILI
Jerry Coons Jr. comes to Phoenix with a top ten at the Chili Bowl finish fresh
on his mind. Coons finished 9th in a 200 plus car field Saturday
night, that included NASCAR and NHRA regulars in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He finished
third behind Multi-Knoxville
Nationals Winner Danny Lasoski and 20-time World of Outlaws champ Steve
Kinser Wednesday night in the preliminary feature.
COONS
TO AUSTRALIA
Jerry Coons will travel to Australia immediately following this weekend’s
Copper World Classic to compete at Parramatta City Raceway driving a midget for
Mark Cooper.
