(AUGUST
15, 2006, PERRIS, CA)
We interrupt this portion of the racing season with a special bulletin!
Sprint Car star Tony Jones is
BACK! The rejuvenated driver is
back to his old form and he heads the field for this Saturday’s Hot August 70s
Night at Perris Auto Speedway. The
show, which features the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars presented by Temecula Valley Pipe
& Supply, will offer $5.00 admission to fans showing their driver’s
license with a 1970s birth date at the ticket window.
Gates will open at 5:00 PM with racing at 7:00.
It
is only appropriate that Jones, a product of the 1970s, comes into Saturday
night’s event on a roll. Since
Memorial Day weekend, the affable second-generation star has been kicking tail
and taking names. Under the bright
lights at The PAS, the linebacker size racer won the Annual Salute to Indy the
night before the Indianapolis 500 for his first win in nearly three years.
Much to the delight of his loyal fans – commonly referred to as the
“Tony Jones Nation” – the 36 year-old Norco, California resident has won
three of the last six USAC/CRA races on the Riverside County clay oval.
Jones
who was plagued by a mind boggling series of mechanical ills in 2004 and 2005,
joined forces with car owner Mark Alexander for the 2006 season.
In addition to their three wins, they have one second place finish; two
fourth place finishes and three fifths.
Over
the years, the 2000 Oval Nationals champion has endeared himself to the fans
with breathtaking slide jobs executed to the perfection of a fine Picasso
painting. Two weeks ago, he
thrilled a large crowd that gathered at The PAS with a vintage Jones slide job
to pull off a last lap corner win his heat race and then used another one to
take the lead from series point leader and 2005 champion Damion Gardner to win
the 30 lap main event. Then, as has
become a Jones tradition over the years, he jumped out of his car and climbed to
the top of the catch fence on the front straight as the crowd roared their
approval.
Jones
flashy season sees him sitting fourth in the point standings only 30 markers
behind Temecula, California’s Mike Spencer.
He is 216 points behind leader Gardner.
Since Memorial Day weekend, the veteran has scored 468 points.
Only Cory Kruseman (530) and Gardner & Temecula, California’s Mike
Spencer (501) have scored more. With
a few breaks early in the season, Jones could have been contending for the title
with Gardner and Ventura, California’s Kruseman.
If
Jones’ slide jobs & fence scaling exploits or $5.00 to get into the races
if you were born in the 1970s cannot lure you off the couch and into The PAS
grandstands on Saturday, surely the wild fight between Kruseman and Gardner for
the championship can. Amazingly,
their fierce war for the crown has seen the top spot in the standings change
hands at ever race weekend since the first race in July.
The series had a rare weekend off last Saturday, but two weeks ago,
Kruseman held a 26-point lead at the start of the night.
By the time the checkered flag ended the ferocious, crowd pleasing main
event, Gardner, who lives in Concord, California, had taken the lead back and he
brings a five-point advantage to this Saturday nights dirt track brawl.
Saturday’s
gratification of dirt track indulgence will consist of hot laps, qualifying,
four ten lap heat races, a 12 lap B main event and a decadent 30-lap A main
event.
Advance
tickets are on sale 24 hours a day by calling 1-800-595-4849.
You can also order advance tickets on the Internet at tix.com or

Saturday
night’s affair on Riverside County’s only clay half-mile oval will be
preceded by Friday’s drag racing action on the Diamond Valley Honda Street
Legal Strip at The PAS Drag Strip. Gates
at the drag strip open at 5:00 PM with racing at 6:00.
The drag strip is also located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds.
Perris
Auto Speedway is located on the freeway close Lake Perris Fairgrounds, home of
the Southern California Fair, approximately one hour east of Los Angeles and one
hour North of San Diego. To get to
the track, take the 215 freeway, exit on the Ramona Expressway and go two miles
east to the fairgrounds.
