(AUGUST
1, 2006, PERRIS, CA)
The seesaw battle for the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series Championship that
has raged over the past month will continue on Shav Glick and Jim Short night
this Saturday, August 5th, at Perris Auto Speedway.
Gate will open at 5:00 PM with racing at 7:00.
Starting
the first weekend in July, first place in the championship standings has changed
hands at the last three race weekends. Heading
into the July 1st race at The PAS, Concord, California’s Damion
Gardner – aka “The Demon” – had been sitting on top of the heap since
May 13th. And, the
defending series champion extended his lead to 39 points after a race at
Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Arizona on May 20th.
However, Gardner’s chief rival in the fight for the 2006 crown,
Ventura, California’s Cory Kruseman – aka “The Kruser” - hung tough and
clawed his way back into contention. The
35-year old retook the point lead from Gardner on July 1st and the
two heated rivals have exchanged the top spot each race weekend since.
Heading
into last weekend’s annual two-night affair at Skagit Speedway in Alger,
Washington, Gardner held a slim two-point advantage over Kruseman in the
standings. Gardner won the Friday
night portion of the show in the great northwest while Kruseman finished fifth
in the 30 lap main event. Gardner
thus extended his point lead to 14 markers heading into last Saturday’s race.
However, Gardner was eliminated from Saturday’s main event after a
lap-14 tangle with Santa Maria, California’s Danny Sheridan and legendary
veteran Rip Williams of Yorba Linda, California.
Gardner ended up 18th while Kruseman took second behind upset
main event winner Jayme Barnes of Everett, Washington.
That finish gave Kruseman, a two-time Oval Nationals champion, a 26-point
lead as the series returns to its home track in Riverside County this Saturday
night.
Another
large crowd is expected to be on hand for this Saturday’s fierce open wheel
action. At intermission, they will
be able to honor a pair of the nations best ever-motor sports writers.
Shav Glick and Jim Short will be on hand on a night named after them.
Glick retired from the Los Angeles Times after more than 50 of loyal
service in January. Short called it
a career from the Riverside Press Enterprise on July 1st.
The PAS originally planned to hold a separate night for each of them.
However, being longtime good friends, Glick suggested they do both on the
same evening. During Saturday’s
intermission, the Perris Auto Speedway Press Box will be renamed the “Glick
– Short Press Box.” At last
Saturday night’s races at The PAS, promoter Don Kazarian commented on Short
and Glick. “We are honoring two
of the best people in racing, but in reality, it is an honor for us to rename
the press box after them and have their names forever linked with Perris Auto
Speedway.”
Saturday’s
edition of “Fury on 4-Wheels” will feature hot laps, qualifying, four 10-lap
heat races, a B Main, and a 30-lap A main event and that will likely produce
wheel to wheel action, a few short tempers and one happy winner.
And, don’t forget, at Intermission The PAS will honor two-fine
gentlemen who can both be described in one five-letter word – CLASS!
