(JUNE
6, 2006, PERRIS, CA)
The Annual Kid’s Month will continue this Saturday night, June 10th,
at Perris Auto Speedway when Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply presents the
USAC/CRA Sprint Cars featuring the west coast’s top open wheel drivers.
All kids 12 and under, who are accompanied by an adult, will be admitted
free. Spectator gates will open at
5:00 PM with racing at 6:30.
Ventura,
California’s Cory Kruseman will renew his battle with archrival and defending
series champion Damion Gardner (Concord, California) when the series returns to
its home track on Saturday. Last
Saturday night at Jim Naylor’s Ventura Raceway, Kruseman outdistanced Gardner
for his second victory of 2006 and his 16th all-time win in USAC/CRA
competition. That triumph gave the
35-year old veteran 79 wins on the all-time CRA/USAC/SCRA west coast victory
list. That is only one win shy of
National Sprint Car Hall of Famer Bubby Jones’ total of 80, which is fifth
best on the list.
Kruseman’s
win whittled Gardner’s advantage in the standings to 30 points heading into
this Saturday’s melee on the Riverside County Clay oval.
Amazingly, Kruseman has only finished out of the top three in the main
event three times this season (those three finishes were a 4th, 10th
and 23rd). Gardner has
finished out of the top three five times this season (4th two times,
6th, 7th and 21st).
However, Gardner’s spectacular efforts in qualifying have been more
than enough for him to maintain the points leads.
He has been fast qualifier 10 times this season and that equals 60 extra
points!
Gardner
hopes for a little better fortune in Saturday’s thirty-lap main than he has
had during the past two outings at The PAS.
On May 13th at the Sokola Classic, he got caught up in crash
involving several other cars (including Kruseman) and his crew had to rebuild
the front end of his racecar on a red flag period.
The effort proved vital as he shocked everyone by driving the damaged car
to a sixth place finish. Two weeks
ago during the Salute to Indy, Gardner slammed the crash wall and once again
damaged the front end. In a similar
effort, the crew thrashed to get the car back on the track and the slender
superstar came all the way back to seventh at the Eddie Ramirez checkered flag.
Yorba
Linda, California’s Rip Williams plans to return to action this Saturday
night. Two weeks ago the veteran
driver was involved in one of the wildest flips of his long career in turn three
at The PAS during the main event. The
tough veteran walked away from the crash, but last week he had flu like symptoms
at Ventura and turned the cockpit of the famous John & Sharon Jory owned
black #3 to retired driver Mike English (Norwalk, CA) for the night.
English qualified second quick, won the B main and was sixth in the A
main in his first ride in a couple of years.
Saturday’s
dirt track brawl will feature qualifying, a C main if necessary, four 10 lap
heat races, a B main and a 30 lap gloves off fight to the checkered flag A main
event.
Perris
Auto Speedway is located on the freeway close Lake Perris Fairgrounds
approximately one hour east of Los Angeles and one hour North of San Diego.
To get to the track, take the 215 freeway, exit on the Ramona Expressway
and go two miles east to the fairgrounds.
Saturday’s race on the
only half-mile clay oval in Riverside County will be preceded by Friday’s drag
racing action on the Diamond Valley Honda Street Legal Drag Strip.
The drag strip is also located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds.
Anyone with a valid driver’s license, registration and helmet is
eligible to race at the drag strip. Gates
at the drag strip open at 5:00 PM with racing at 6:00 PM.
