(MAY
9. 2006, PERRIS, CA)
Teammates “Super” Ricky Gaunt and “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr.
have gotten hot heading into this Saturday’s 6th Annual Sokola
Classic at Perris Auto Speedway. The
race, which features the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars presented by Temecula Valley Pipe
& Supply, will culminate with a 40 lap main event that pays $5,000.00 to win
and $500.00 to start.
Driving
for the Smiley Crane Service team out of Phoenix, Arizona, Gaunt and Davis have
won the last two main events at The PAS. The
boisterous Gaunt, SCRA’s 2004 Champion who makes his home in Torrance,
California, won his first USAC/CRA main of the season at The PAS on April 1st.
On April 29th, Davis, from Buckeye, Arizona, led wire-to-wire
and defeated teammate Gaunt to win the 30-lap main event on the Riverside County
clay oval. It was the first win for
the 38 year old at The PAS and in USAC/CRA competition.
The
1993 CRA Rookie of the year and a two-time (1996 & 1999) Arizona Sprint Car
Association champion, Davis has been on fire of late.
In the series last four races he has only finished out of the top three
one time. In addition to the win at
the PAS, he was second in the main event at USA Race Park in Tucson, Arizona on
April 8th and third at The PAS on March 25th.
Gaunt,
37, has come up big at The PAS in major races in the past.
The father of two sons would like to add this year’s Sokola Classic
title to his list of PAS triumphs. In
1999 Gaunt won the Budweiser Oval Nationals at The PAS and in 2004 he was the
top dog in the Annual Jack Kindoll Classic.
Three
other former Sokola Classic champions, Mike Kirby (2005), Cory Kruseman (2004)
and Tony Jones (2001), will be on hand for this Saturday’s high dollar show.
This
will be the first year that the Sokola Classic will take place at The PAS.
The race was previously held at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Arizona.
It honors the memory of Gary Sokola and his son Mark.
Gary was a former winning car owner and was president of the original CRA
for ten seasons from 1978 to 1987. He
also served as Assistant Competition Director for USAC (United States Auto
Club). Mark was Gary’s son and
was voted the Most Improved Driver with CRA in 1986.
Saturday’s
knock down drag em’ out dirt track heavyweight sprint car fight will consist
of qualifying, four ten lap heat races, a B main and if necessary a C main.
The cars who transfer out of those races will then go at it in a no holds
barred 40 lap brawl for the $5,000.00 top prize.
Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM with racing at 7:00.
Perris
Auto Speedway is located on the freeway close Lake Perris Fairgrounds
approximately one hour east of Los Angeles and one hour North of San Diego.
To get to the track, take the 215 freeway, exit on the Ramona Expressway
and go two miles east to the fairgrounds.
Saturday’s
race on the only half-mile clay oval in Riverside County will be preceded by
Friday’s drag racing action on the Diamond Valley Honda Street Legal Drag
Strip. The drag strip is also
located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds. Anyone
with a valid driver’s license, registration and helmet is eligible to race at
the drag strip. Gates at the drag
strip open at 5:00 PM with racing at 6:00 PM.
