(MAY
3, 2006, PERRIS, CA)
Perris Auto Speedway will play host the to the 6th Annual
Sokola Classic when Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply presents the USAC/CRA
Sprint Cars on Saturday, May 13. The
event will culminate with a 40-lap main event that pays $5,000.00 to win and
$500.00 to start. The race honors
the memory of former CRA President and USAC Assistant Director of Competition
Gary Sokola and his son Mark.
Sammy
Bahr, who grew up with Mark Sokola, is the driving force for the event.
“I grew up in the same housing track as the Sokola’s.
Gary Sokola owned a CRA Sprint Car that Lee Robison drove to quite a few
wins.” Bahr, who now helps out
rising USAC/CRA star Bobby Cody, continued, “I used to go over there (Sokola’s
house) when I was a little kid and would get kicked out of the garage for
getting in the way. Then every
Sunday I would go over and help wash the racecar.
Gary was like a Dad to me.”
The
year after Gary Sokola died, his son Mark and USAC/CRA car owner Anne Wilkerson
got the ball rolling and got Bahr involved. The race was known as the Gary
Sokola Classic and honored the boisterous racing official.
Bahr and Mark started
running the event in the second year, but three years ago, Mark, the 1986 CRA
Most Improved Driver, passed away. Since
that day, the race has been known as the Sokola Classic to honor not only Gary,
but Mark as well.
Perris
promoter Don Kazarian added, “We are pleased to host the Sokola Classic for
the first time. Hopefully it will
be here in years to come. Gary was
a successful car owner and administrator. He
worked hard at every endeavor in racing. Mark
was a good young driver, too. We
are honored that Sammy and the Sokola family picked The PAS to host this
year’s classic."
