(MARCH
21, 2006, PERRIS, CA)
When Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply presents the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars
at Perris Auto Speedway this Saturday night, it will mark the tenth anniversary
of the grand opening of the track. Spectator
gates will open at 5:00 PM with racing at 7:00.
It
seems like just yesterday that current Nextel Cup Rookie of the Year contender
J.J. Yeley drove his dad’s #7 to victory when the beautiful facility threw its
doors open for the first time on March 30, 1996.
Yeley went on to win three of the first five SCRA Sprint Car main events
at the Riverside County clay oval. “It
seems like it was just a couple of weeks ago,” said Perris promoter Don
Kazarian. “Construction crews
were putting the finishing touches on the facility just before fans walked in
for the first time. Now it is
already ten years later and we are in our eleventh season.
It has been a fun ride.”
One
thing that has been a constant over the years at The PAS has been great racing.
First with SCRA from 1996 through 2003 and now with the USAC/CRA Sprint
Cars since 2004. Fans attending
this Saturday’s event can expect to see the usual knockdown, drag em’ out
with their boots on war with west coast top sprint car stars including defending
champion and current series point leader Damion Gardner (Concord, CA), Rip
Williams (Yorba Linda, CA), Cory Kruseman (Ventura, CA), Mike Spencer (Temecula,
CA) and a host of others.
Heading
into Saturday’s event, the highly competitive series has produced four
different winners in four races this season.
Defending USAC National Sprint Car Champion Levi Jones of Olney, Illinois
won the season opener on the big Manzanita Speedway half-mile in January.
Williams won at The PAS season opener on Super Bowl weekend.
Kruseman scored his initial win of season when he held off a last lap
charge from Gardner at The PAS on March 4th (fans can see that race on the
Outdoor Channel’s “USAC Thunder Series” on April 1st).
Gardner, who led the series with 15 main event wins on his way to the
title last year, took his first win of 2006 last Saturday with a thrilling last
corner pass of Torrance, California’s Rickie Gaunt at Manzanita.
Kruseman also got past Gaunt and finished second while Gaunt came home in
third.
Heading
into this Saturday’s showdown at The PAS, Gardner has a slim seven-point
advantage over Kruseman in the championship standings.
Spencer, who earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Cal Poly
Pomona, is currently ranked third in the standings with Santa Maria,
California’s “Showtime” Danny Sheridan fourth and 2004 champion Williams
fifth.
Early
arriving fans will get a chance to see Gardner try to extend his streak of fast
qualifying times on Saturday. Thus
far in five races in 2006, “The Demon” has been fast qualifier at every
event. Going back to the end of
2005, he has a streak of six fast times in a row. Amazingly, he was fast
qualifier on 22 occasions in 2005!
Saturday’s
program of ferocious dirt track fisticuffs will consist of qualifying, four heat
races comprised of ten laps each, preliminary C & B mains and a 30-lap A
main event. Advance tickets are
available by calling 1-800-595-4849. You
can also order advance tickets on the Internet at tix.com or
perrisautospeedway.com.
Perris
Auto Speedway is located on the freeway close Lake Perris Fairgrounds
approximately one hour east of Los Angeles and one hour North of San Diego.
To get to the track, take the 215 freeway, exit on the Ramona Expressway
and go two miles east to the fairgrounds.
Saturday’s
race on the only half-mile clay oval in Riverside County will be preceded by
Friday’s drag racing action on the Diamond Valley Honda Street Legal Drag
Strip. The drag strip is also
located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds. Anyone
with a valid driver’s license, registration and helmet is eligible to race at
the drag strip. Gates at the drag
strip open at 5:00 PM with racing at 6:00 PM.
