(FEBRUARY
14, 2006, PERRIS, CA) This
Saturday evening, when Perris Auto Speedway switches to its night schedule for
the remainder of the year, Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply will present the
USAC/CRA Sprint Cars. Under the lights, Concord, California’s Damion Gardner,
the 2005 USAC/CRA champion, hopes to end a winless streak in the third year
series.
Known
as “The Demon” to his adoring fans and his detractors as well who depict him
literally as a “Demon,” Gardner has not won a race since November 11th
when he captured round two of the prestigious Western World Championships on the
big half-mile at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Arizona.
To a majority of sprint car chauffeurs four races without a win is not
uncommon. However, as west coast
fans have found out, four races in a row without a main event win for Gardner,
followed by one of his patented “Demon
Interviews,” is an eternity. Could
“The Demon” be washed up? Is he
over the hill? Is the handwriting
on the wall? Hardly!
The man many refer to as the “Most Exciting” driver to ever set a
tire on Perris Auto Speedway is ready to pounce.
Even
though he has not won in four races, the seemingly fearless superstar has only
finished out of the top five one time in that stretch.
In the series last race at The PAS on February 4th, Gardner
stalked archrival Rip Williams (Yorba Linda, CA) in the closing laps.
In an amazing final quarter of a lap, he nearly robbed Williams of his
102nd lifetime triumph as they crossed side by side under the
checkered flag in another PAS thrilling finish.
That runner-up finish left Gardner a mere one point behind legendary star
Cory Kruseman (Ventura, CA) in the USAC/CRA standings heading into Saturday race
under the stars.
Since
the debut of the USAC/CRA Series in 2004, Gardner has only gone more than five
races without a win one time. That
came when he went winless in the last seven races of 2004 and the first race of
2005. The 28 year-old has a total
of 23 USAC/CRA lifetime wins. That
is tops on the list. Kruseman sits
second in that category with 14 while Mike Kirby (Torrance, CA) is third with 10
and Rip Williams rounds out the top four with 9 wins.
All four will be on hand for this Saturday’s night of thrilling wheel
to wheel traditional sprint car action and they will be joined by stars “Super
Rickie” Gaunt (Torrance, CA), Tony Jones (Norco, CA), Danny ”Showtime”
Sheridan (Santa Maria, CA), Mike Spencer (Temecula, CA), Jesse Hockett (Warsaw,
MO), Josh Ford (Camarillo, CA) and a host of others.
A total field of more than 40 cars is expected to be on hand on Saturday.
Saturday’s
spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM with racing at 7:00 PM.
The clay slingin’ show will consist of qualifying, four heat races
comprised of ten laps each, preliminary C & B mains and a 30-lap A main
event. Advance tickets are
available by calling 1-800-595-4849. You
can also order advance tickets on the Internet at tix.com or
perrisautospeedway.com.
Saturday’s
race on the only half-mile clay oval in Riverside County will be preceded by
Friday’s drag racing action on the Diamond Valley Automotive Group Honda –
Mazda – Volkswagen Street Legal Drag Strip.
The drag strip is also located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds.
Anyone with a valid driver’s license, registration and helmet is
eligible to race at the drag strip. Gates
at the drag strip open at 5:00 PM with racing at 6:00 PM.
Perris
Auto Speedway is located on the freeway close Lake Perris Fairgrounds
approximately one hour east of Los Angeles and one hour North of San Diego.
To get to the track, take the 215 freeway, exit on the Ramona Expressway
and go two miles east to the fairgrounds.
