(FEBRUARY
1, 2006, PERRIS, CA)
It was confirmed late Tuesday evening that Levi Jones, the defending USAC
National Sprint Car Champion, has thrown his helmet into the ring of possible
main event contenders when Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply presents the
USAC/CRA Sprint Cars at Perris Auto Speedway’s 11th season opener
this Saturday afternoon.
Jones,
a 23 year-old native of Olney, Illinois, will team with Lincoln, Indiana’s
Dave Darland and Mopar car owner Dwight Cheney for Saturday’s race under the
sun. Two weeks ago Jones, driving
for Nextel Cup Champion Tony Stewart, outdistanced Ventura, California’s Cory
Kruseman to win the USAC/CRA opener on the big Manzanita Speedway half-mile in
Phoenix, Arizona.
The
trio of Jones, Darland and Cheney is an early season super team.
In addition to Jones being the current National Champion, Darland, who
will turn 40 in September, won the 1999 USAC National Sprint Car Championship.
He also won the 10th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals at The
PAS last November. The affable open
wheel legend followed that victory up with a win in the prestigious Western
World Championship at Manzanita the following week.
Not
to be left out, Cheney won the 2002 PAS season opener in the daytime as a car
owner with current Nextel Cup Rookie of the Year contender J.J. Yeley as his
driver. He also picked up a victory
when Darland steered his bright orange and blue #42 to the checkered flag at
last years USAC/CRA season opener at Manzanita.
Saturday’s
spectator gates will open at 11:00 AM for race hungry dirt track fans and the
first race will bump off at 1:00 PM. Advance tickets are on sale 24 hours a day
by calling 1-800-595-4849. You can
also order advance tickets on the Internet at tix.com or perrisautospeedway.com.
Saturday’s
afternoon affair on Riverside County’s only clay half-mile oval will be
preceded by Friday’s drag racing action on the Diamond Valley Automotive Group
Honda – Mazda – Volkswagen Street Legal Drag Strip.
The drag strip is also located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds.
Perris
Auto Speedway is located on the freeway close Lake Perris Fairgrounds
approximately one hour east of Los Angeles and one hour North of San Diego.
To get to the track, take the 215 freeway, exit on the Ramona Expressway
and go two miles east to the fairgrounds.
