ORLAND, CA - At the
monthly board meeting of the Glenn County Fair Board of Directors it was
announced that Paul and Carol Turner, promoters of Orland Raceway, had submitted
the only Request For Proposal package for the Raceway's upcoming contract term.
The Turners received a score of 95 on their Tier One proposal. The
subsequent Tier Two bid was approved and accepted by the Board, so Paul and
Carol Turner will continue to promote racing at the Glenn County Fairgrounds in
Orland for the 2006-07-08 seasons, with an option to continue for 2009 and 2010.
"We're very excited to begin what will be our tenth year
operating the track here in Orland," announced the Turners. "We
sincerely hope the support from racers and fans will continue, and we hope the
influx of new residents into the Orland community will bring new fans out to
watch this sport right here in our hometown."
The Turners began their racing venture in Orland late in 1995 with
a Fall Destruction Derby. They then entered into a contractual agreement
with the State of California to promote racing in Orland in cooperation with
then Fair Manager Paul Briggs. Since then, the Turners have become devoted
as well as determined to continue racing in Orland.
But many folks don't know the Turners background in the sport which
compels their love of motorsports. Paul’s racing involvement goes
far beyond the past nine years at Orland Raceway. He began wrenching on
cars in his Dad’s shop in the 1950s, when his Dad Glen fielded sprint cars
driven by such well known sportsmen as Johnny Rutherford and Louie Unser.
When he was old enough, Paul took over the driving chores, running everything
from Late Models to Sprints, Modifieds to Midgets. During this time he
competed with NASCAR, NARC, CRA, and USAC at tracks throughout California,
Arizona, Nevada and Oregon. Paul helped form the West Coast Modified
Association, a group which he and a partner successfully promoted for several
years. Paul’s achievements include WCMA Modified Champion, NASCAR
Modified Champion; he holds five track records for fast qualifying time, two of
which will stand forever as the tracks are now out of business. He has
over 100 main event victories to his credit.
Paul and Carol Turner have both worked in the advertising field for
over thirty years spanning newspaper advertising and production, radio sales and
advertising agencies. The advertising knowledge is especially valuable in
promoting racing on a budget; newspaper skills are helpful in getting the word
out to the public for a minimum investment. Layout and design skills have been
put to use in production of the Raceway's weekly Souvenir Program which sells
out on a regular basis. Newspaper ad production is always welcome when the
publication is presented with email compatible formats.
"We will continue to offer Family Entertainment at reasonable
prices so that parents can afford to bring their kids out to enjoy the
sport,"promise the Turners. "And we will do our best to increase
awareness of the Glenn County Fairgrounds through good clean family fun.
We believe this community needs a local venue where families can enjoy
motorsports, kids can watch their heroes race, and we can build a new field of
racers."
In closing, the Turners stated, “In the heart of Orland at the
Glenn County Fairgrounds” has been printed on many of the Raceway's
promotional pieces. Orland Raceway is truly in the heart of Orland, and most
importantly very much in our own hearts."
