December 12, 2006...Gary
Koster has proven that age is not a factor when you have a passion for racing.
His tenacity and experience earned him the Combined Championship for
2006.
Northern
California
Modified (Sprint Car) Association held their annual banquet At Harvest Park
Bowl,
Brentwood
, hosted by owners Jim and Ann Wangeman. A
wonderful Tri-tip and chicken dinner with all the trimmings was prepared and
served to the delight of more than seventy NCMA members.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of trophies.
2006 President Michael Zarevich and Vice-President Rob Hammond did the
honors. NCMA runs several different
divisions and when one racer almost sweeps the works its pretty special.
In the dirt series, Gary Koster compiled the most points to win the
championship. In the Select Series,
also competing on dirt, and with members from other clubs that run under NCMA
regulations, Gary Koster again was the champion.
Coming down to the last race in the pavement series, Koster came in third
in the pavement points, and only because of problems in that final race.
This made Koster the 2006 Combined Champion of NCMA.
No small fete. President
Zarevich reminded the group that when last years winner, Ed Amador, accepted his
trophy he challenged the younger drivers to rise to the top this year. He
didn’t mean Koster who was the only driver behind the wheel older than Amador
this season!! In accepting his
trophies, as wife Jeanette stood by his side in support,
Gary
talked of possible retirement when grandson, Jack, can get into the cockpit and
pilot the #17 sprint car. Jeanette
offered that Jack is only 5 ½ years old.
With
Koster almost making a clean sweep, the door was left open for the pavement
championship. Two racers tied the points and since there are no provisions for
this sort of event in the rules, there are co-champions for 2006.
Jimmy Lavell in his rookie season with NCMA tied with Michael Zarevich
who was rookie of the year just a few seasons back.
Both men had an outstanding season and both ended with exactly the same
points making history for NCMA.
NCMA
members are already looking forward to the 2007 season as Promotors Ed Amador
and Rob Hammond have announced races already scheduled at
Altamont
, Reno-Fernley, and
Hanford
. After Amador and Hammond return
from the RPM workshop in
Reno
, December 7, 8 and 9, the 2007 schedule should be ready for the first meeting
of the New Year on
January 10, 2007
with the site to be determined at a later date.
