August 6, 2006...Jimmy Lavell proved winning a race wasn’t a fluke this
evening as he won his second main event at the beautifully reconfigured Altamont
Motorsports Park.
Northern California Modified (Sprint car) Association put
on a most exciting evening of racing tonight as Lavell of Brentwood set fast
time. Manteca’s Michael Zarevich
was second, Gary Koster from Woodland was third and Jeff Burrows was fourth.
Points for all of these positions are very crucial because at the
beginning of this race, Zarevich and Koster were tied for first place in the
asphalt series.
The first heat race was as exciting as a main event.
These non-wing 360’s know how to make it around the half mile.
Zarevich pulled off the win as he took the lead on the last lap, coming
off of turn four. The second heat
was just as hot as Rob Hammond brought his Morgan Hill Wingless-Flyer in first.
The Trophy Dash brought the fastest of the sprinters for
four quick laps. Koster earned his points as he won it. Lavell was second,
Zarevich was third and Burrows was fourth.
The thirty five lap main event was ready to roll as
Patterson’s Steve Amador and Burt Siverling of Concord headed the pack to the
green. Bill Zarevich from Lathrop
and Ed Amador of Modesto sat a row back and Lavell was in the five spot.
S. Amador held the lead until Koster took it about a third of the way
into the event. Burrows’
“Silver Bullet” had second, S. Amador was making third look good and Lavell
was workin’ in fourth. About ten
more rounds and positions had shifted a little more Lavell had moved into third
and M. Zarevich took over fourth. Only one car ended his night early as E. Amador lost his
brakes and got off the track without a caution.
With only three laps to go the Harvest Bowl hot rod got around Koster and
took it to the win. Koster kept
second, M. Zarevich finished third. Burrows sewed up fourth and Hammond was
fifth. Some interesting details of
the race; Jimmy Lavell made the fastest lap at Altamont in a 360, two barrel
carb sprint car during the race. It’s not counted as a record when done during
a race, but certainly worth mentioning. Kudo’s
also go out to another young man driving for Don Hicks’ Racing.
Clay Thorkelson from Patterson took the #79 DMSI racer onto the asphalt
for the first time tonight and did a great job.
He had one of the quickest laps in practice and even though he ran at the
back of the pack for most of the evening, he managed to make a great showing for
the second time in a sprint car in ten years.
NCMA’s asphalt series will return to Altamont on Sunday
August 27. For further information
