July 22, 2006...The asphalt at Stockton 99 Speedway was hot enough to fry
an egg tonight as the temperature reached 113 degrees, but Woodland’s Gary
Koster didn’t slow down long enough to find out.
Koster is on a mission, taking the last two dirt races and now coming in
first on the asphalt.
One of the “perks” of asphalt racing is that the
sprints can qualify. Everyone works
hard in hot laps to be able to set a good pace.
Jeff Burrows of Manteca was out there doing some practicing. Burrows, has
never run “99” in a sprint car and was ready to get some laps in.
He had a spin out and while trying to get stopped, left no room for Rob
Hammond who took out Borrows’ left front; axel, shock and three radius rods.
Good thing Manteca isn’t far from the track as a trip was made home,
parts brought back and Burrows qualified fourth.
He also came in fourth in the heat, but by then had figured out the track
as he won the Trophy Dash in his Valley Motorcycle Training sprinter.
The heat race had Koster taking the checkered flag.
Patterson’s Steve Amador second, Burrows third and Jimmy Lavell of
Brentwood coming fourth.
Michael Zarevich set fast time tonight and ended up through
the inversion on the pole for the main event. Hammons’s Hale Lumber sprint car
on the first row, outside. Lavell
second row, with Burrows and S. Amador in the Home Owners Electric racer
starting fifth. At the half way
point Koster had come from the last row to take the lead.
One of the tidbits of Stockton’s long history is that Koster still
holds the track’s record for speed in a winged midget so he had every right to
the lead! There was only one incident during the main, when dad Ed Amador gave
son Steve a little “let me by nudge”. The
younger Amador did an excellent job making a total 360 in his 360 sprinter and
never brought out the yellow for caution free main event. As previously stated the Hansen Machine car driven by Koster
was first. Manteca’s Zarevich
finished second, Hammond from Morgan Hill finished third. Burrows was fourth and Lavell’s Randy Jones Const. Machine
came in fifth.
The pavement portion of NCMA will be racing at Altamont
Motorsports Park on Saturday August 5. Join NCMA for an exciting evening of racing.
With more than half of the racing season complete, the
point’s chase is on. The top five
in pavement points include Koster and Zarevich tied for first, Burrows, Lavell,
and Hammond. Koster also leads the
dirt points, with David Goodwill, Ed Amador, Lavell and Scott Holloway the top
five. Hopefully the weather will cool down as the point’s race heats up.
