July 8, 2006...Bob
Newberry of Oakley really knows how to get around tight dirt tracks and proved
it by coming from tenth to take the win at Placerville Speedway in the NCMA
Select Series this evening.
There
were plenty of 360 –two barrel sprints that made the tow up the hill for a hot
time in Hangtown. Nearly forty cars
were divided into four heat races which proved to be the undoing of several
drivers. Heat I had a pretty good
go as Scott Holloway, Dave Hayes, Jimmy Lavell, and Doug Brewer made the “A”
Main line up. Heat II was an
entirely different story. Steve
Stein and Don Emery mixed it up and Stein did a flip right in front of the flag
stand. The sprint car was done for
the night, but Stein was ok as he got out and helped the crew get his car loaded
and off the track. Matt Streeter, Jay Youngman, Bob Newberry and Tony Richards
were in for the
Main
. Heat III wasn’t any kinder to
Burt Siverling as he got off the edge, tore down the caution light on the back
stretch, did a pirouette and landed on his top.
He got his bell rung pretty good but was moving around at the end of the
evening. Nathan Johnson, Steve
Fletcher Jr., Taylor Simas and Jerry Kobza earned their way into the
Main
. Gary Lewis, Dennis Fraser, Terry
Schank, Jr. and Gary Koster finished up the final heat to join the rest of the
sprinters for the feature event. The
only mishap was David Spaulding who was part of a three wide situation that
didn’t quite work out and ended up with some damage but managed to get it
together to make the “C” Main.
Doug
Gandy, Sr. was late to come this evening and was put into the “C”.
He has run
Placerville
many times in the past, in fact he is a past
Placerville
champion, but tonight was not to be his best run.
It was his first time in the car this season and he got caught in a melee
that sent him into a barrel role down the front straight landing on his head.
The drive line came out and chewed up his legs pretty good.
He was released from the hospital and sent on his way home after a stitch
job. Jack Clark won that event.
Michael
Zarevich and John Anderson had a meeting in the “B” Main with Zarevich
catching the worst of it. Another
tangle up had Bill Bossembark facing the oncoming traffic.
After David Spaulding got his sprint car together from the heats, he
ended up going the wrong way too. Jeremy
Hawes, Justin Funkhouser, Alan Clark and James Postell transferred to the Main
Event.
Twenty
wingless sprints started the race with Scott Holloway in his RPS Racing machine
and Matt Streeter’s sprint sponsored by Matt Streeter Racing Inc. brought the
pack to the green. Streeter jumped
right into the lead. After all the
carnage from the pre-race action the Main Event was a quick, smooth twenty laps
that got over before you could believe it.
Pretty close to the end Dennis Fraser had a flat and was out, but no more
shake ups except when Bob Newberry shook up Streeter by taking the lead with
only a few laps to go. Newberry
started in tenth and out ran Streeter for the money.
Tony Richards also was in there and finished third.
Holloway was fourth and Jay Youngman rounded out the top five.
NCMA
will be running on the dirt at Chowchilla Saturday July 15 and the asphalt
division will make and appearance at Stockton 99 Speedway on Saturday July 22.
