June 28, 2006...Jimmy
Lavelle gave an outstanding performance today as he swept past the man who had
held the lead for twenty eight of the thirty lap main event to claim the
victory.
Northern
California Modified (sprint car) Association tried to have a go at Altamont last
Sunday for their first showing of the season on the newly refurbished half mile,
but Mother Nature took the win as the on-again, off- again showers kept any
racing from happening that day.
Fast
forward one week and qualifying began. Michael
Zarevich set fast time in his Performance Machine of Manteca sprinter.
Rancho Cordova
’s Bobby Bankson was second quick in his Bankson Family Sponsored #43 Mopar
racer, and Jeff Burrows, from
Manteca
, in his sophomore season was third quick time.
Two
heats were run with
Antioch
’s Jeff Kindt the front runner in his Mike Rose Autobody Machine in heat one
and Lavelle of Brentwood picking up the win for the second heat.
Dash
time and the four quick guys headed for the trophy.
Scott Holloway driving Dave Jensen’s sprint car snatched that trophy.
Zarevich was second, Burrows, also of
Manteca
and sponsored by Valley Motorcycle Training, was third and Bankson rounded out
fourth position.
Thirty
laps of main event action ready to roll and more than a dozen NCMA sprints hit
the asphalt. Zarevich, who has been
showing some pretty exciting headway this season, led the pack for twenty eight
action packed laps. These guys are
true racers, no cautions, no wrecks but plenty of passing and just plain fun to
watch them run. When it looked like
Zarevich had it in his pocket, “Gentleman Jim” Lavelle, who shares ownership
of his car with Dave and Pam Guillaume, proved that a little more experience can
save the day. With two laps
remaining he took the outside of the track and made it around Zarevich. Lavelle
is not a stranger to
Altamont
as he was the 1996 All-American division champion. Zarevich tucked right in and
finished in second spot. Gary
Koster from Woodland who likes people to know him as a race car driver and banjo
player proved that race car driver is still number one this week as he came in
third.
Morgan Hill
’s Rob Hammond picked up fourth for his sponsor, Absolute Graphics and Kindt
finished in the top five.
Three
names generally seen at the front end of main events had problems today as Pat
Ariaz, Ed Amador and Scott Holloway all had mechanical problems of some sort
before the day was finished.
The
NCMA Asphalt division will be competing again on the renewed
Altamont
half mile on June 10. See you
there!
