Phoenix, AZ (September 30) When Tony Smiley did not receive the
heads for a new engine to put in the sprint car driven in USAC/CRA races by
Charles Davis,Jr. in California, Davis gave his good frend Fred Bryan a call and
landed a ride for Saturday night's Buddy Taylor Memorial race at Manzanita
Speedway. The other 27 drivers in the field probably wished that the engine
parts for Smiley's car had arrived as Davis was dominant.
Davis, who had won the last Arizona Sprint Car Association race on Manzy's
half mile track started off the evening by setting fast time 19.411 (92.731 mph)
and that was just a warmup for things to come. Of the 28 cars that took
qualifying runs, 22 were whitin a second of Davis' quick time.
Charllie was not impressive in the trophy dash but came from last to first in
winning the first heat race. That earned him a fourth row starting berth in the
25 lap feature.
When the 24 car field lined up for the main event Jeremy Sherman, a winner of
11 feature races this year, was on the pole. He had the lead coming of turn two
and started pulling away from the field. Davis was on the move but by the time
he took over second from J.T. Imperial he was almost a full straightaway behind
Sherman.
Davis got closer with each passing lap and when the leaders encountered
traffic on the 14th lap Davis had cut the lead to a car length. He was on the
highside of the half mile track and shot past Sherman on the 16th lap. The first
yellow flag came out a lap later for a stalled car and on the restart Sherman
tried to reclaim the lead but Davis held him off and steadily built a 2.88
second advantage.
Another yellow with three laps remaining again put Sherman on Davis' rear
bumper. When the green flag waved for the restart it was no contest as Davis had
a 1.68 second advantage when he finished the first lap. He pulled away to a 2.91
second win over Sherman who suffered a third straight defeat for the first time
since 2004. Chris Bonneau, up from 11th, finished third with Mike Martin fourth
and Imperial fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Shon Deskins, Mike Leslie, Jay
Ervine, Ronnie Clark and Chad Boat.
The top four finishers in each of the four heat races went directly to the
main event with the fastest eight drivers inverted by their qualifying time.
The first heat set the pattern as Davis, by virtue of quick time, started
seventh and powered his way to the front with Mike Martin, Andy Reinbold and
Ronnie Clark also making it to the feature. Mike Colegrove was involved in a
crash on the first lap and was unable to start on the restart. Bob Ream, Jr.,
the ninth fastest qualifier, did not finish.
Brandon Lane came out of the second row to win the second heat over Shon
Deskins, the sixth fastest in qualifying, Mike Boneau and J.T. Imperial. Jeff
Henry, the night's second fastest, did not transfer nor did Charlie Fegan and
Matthew Rossi.
The third heat wnet to Nathan High who started fourth. Chad Boat, 7th
quickest, was second ahead of Chuck Buckman, and Mike Leslie, third quick time.
Chris Bonneau started fourth in the final heat and held off a charge by
Jeremy Sherman to take the win. Sherman had 12th fast time but had the eighth
best time among those drivers who made the feature through the heats and that
gave him the pole in the feature.
Eight spots were still open in the feature and those spots went to the top
eight in the 12 lap semi main. "Half Mile Henry", AKA Jeff Henry,
started in the front row and was never challenged as he toured the eight laps in
4:08.18 in taking the green to checker race. Bernie Smith took second ahead of
Robert Marifa. The other main event spots went to Colegrove, Hendricsen, Ogle,
Fegan and Rael
Josh Pelkey earned the pole for the Arizona Race Mart trophy dash by setting
fourth quick time. The drivers finished the way they started..Pelkey, Leslie,
Henry and Davis.

Fourteen year old Chad Boat scored his second straight win in the 15 lap
Arizona Midget Racing Associaton feature race. Jeremy Sherman made a rare start
in the midgets and started along side Bugs Norbury in the front row. He had the
lead going into the first turn and set sail.
Boat started fifth but quickly worked his way into second. He dogged
Sherman's every move and got to the inside of Sherman as they completed the 13th
lap. They were side by side into turn one on the 1/3rd mile track and Boat
pushed, making contact with Sherman's car. He managed to continue but Sherman
needed a push truck and tagged the field.
Boat crossed the finish line two laps later with Bugs Norbury in second, Jeff
Perry third followed by John Sarna and Jeff Henry. Only 14 midgets were on hand
and only ten started the feature. Behind the top five were Jeff Perry, Michael
Marfia, C.J. Sarna, Nathan High and Darin Fala tenth.
High, who had earlier won the trophy dash, came out of the third row and took
the Mike Burkhart car to the win. Boat finished second ahead of Sherman, John
Sarna and Henry. Ony four cars started the second heat as Mike Welker and Robert
Marfia scratched. Perry took the win over Norbury, Michael Marfia and Fala.
