August 19) Most drivers would not consider going winless in two straight races
a losing streak but when you have gone the entire season with only six losses
it could have given Jeremy Sherman an added incentive. At least he drove as if
he had something to prove. He proved it early when he passed the four cars
that started the 25 lap Arizona Sprint Car Association feature in front of
him. He took the lead from Mike Martin before the second lap was completed and
was never seriously challenged on his way to his tenth win of the year.
Sherman set the record for most sprint car wins in a season last year when
he made 16 trips to the winners circle. He will have to win all seven of the
remaining ASCA races to break that record.
After failing to finish his heat race Josh Pekley, ranked second in points,
made a great drive from13th to second but was 4.21 seconds behind Sherman at
the checkered flag and was only a car length ahead of super rookie Mike
Colegrove who started 15th and earned the hard charger award. Mike Bonneau had
his first top five finish of the year with a strong fourth place finish and
Ben Gregg was fifth., also his first top five. Rounding out the top ten were
Bob Ream, Jr., Brian Hacker, Jay Ervine, Mike Leslie and Andy Reinbold.
Jeff Henry was the final qualifier and set fast time for the 24 car field
with a run of 15.060. The well prepared one third mile track continued to get
faster and Ream, although finishing last in the four lap Arizona Race Mart
trophy dash, turned one lap at 14.782 or 81.180 mph.
Colegrove, the best rookie to come along in years and maybe the best of all
time, won the trophy dash for the the third time and easily maintained his
third place ranking in the points.
Sherman started his evening off early. He was one of the early qualifiers
and could manage only a tenth fast time which gave him a second row start in
the first heat. He grabbed the lead early but had to hold off a hard charging
Mike Martin to get the win. Henry was third followed by Hacker and Nathan
High.
Chad Boat was the first car out for qualifying and as a result he was among
the slowest qualifiers which put him on the outside of the front row in the
second eight lapper. He shot away from the field and only a yellow flag for a
stalled car allowed the field to stay close. Seainn Hendricsen took second
ahead of Chris Bonneau, Reinbold and Steve Sandrolini.
The final heat went to front row starter Bernie Smith with pole sitter Mike
Bonneau in second, Gregg third, Matthew Rossi fourth and Ream fifth.
The ASCA sprints will move out onto the big half mile track in their part
of Manzy's 55th Anniversary races August 26.
