Phoenix, AZ (June 10) Jeremy Sherman scored
his seventh win of the year in Saturday night's Arizona Sprint Car Association
feature at Manzanita Speedway and Bugs Norbury made his first trip to the
winner's circle as he won the 20 lap Arizona Midget Racing Association main
event.
Jeremy Sherman found yet another way to win races at Manzanita Speedway.
Sherman, who has won 32 races in the past three and a half years, tracked down
race long leader Brandon Lane in the closing laps of the 25 lap feature on
Manzy's half mile track but needed record speed to get his seventh win of the
season.
Sherman started ninth in the 24 car field and was still mired in seventh at
the midpoint of the race. He switched to the low side of the track and passed
third running Jeff Henry on the 17th lap, took second away from super rookie
15 year old Mike Colegrove a lap latter and then cut into Lane's lead. He had
the lead on the 21st lap and completed his night's work in a record time
breaking his own 25 lap record. Sherman's time of 8:48.25 bettered his old
record of 8:53.51 he had set on June 18, 2005.
Lane appeared to slow in the closing laps but managed to hold off Colegrove
for second. Jeff Henry got his second top five finish of the year with a
strong run that had him fourth at the finish line and Mike Leslie maintained
his third place standings in the points chase with a drive 11th to fifth.
Rounding out the top ten were Mike Martin, Nathan High, Matthew Rossi, Marty
Miller and Josh Pelkey. Sherman's drive from ninth to first made him the hard
charger of the race.
Sherman has won all four of the half mile track races this year and has
beat four different drivers in doing so. He beat Marty Miller in the first
trip to the big track, held off R.J. Johnson in the second race then chased
down Charles Davis, Jr. in the June 3rd race.
The entire sprint car program produced only one yellow flag, that coming on
the first lap of the third heat when Chris Bonneau caught the turn one wall.
The car suffered minimal damage and was repaired in time for the feature.
Colegrove posted a wire to wire win over Jeff Henry in the first heat race,
his third heat win of the year. Rookie driver Dana Fite won his first heat
when he beat Lane in the second eight lapper. The final heat went to Sherman
who started on the pole and easlily beat Rossi.
Pelkey won his first Arizona Race Mart trophy dash of the year as he
outdistanced High, J.T. Imperial and Lane.
The Sprints will be on the half mile track again June 17 in the running of
the Hank Arnold Memorial.

NORBURY MAKES HIS FIRST TRIP TO MANZANITA'S WINNER'S CIRCLE
The AMRA had a short but competitive field for their part of the Saturday
night doubleheader and the June 10th date will be indelibly ingraved in Bugs
Norbury's mind. While Norbury has come close to winning in the AMRA he had
never drank from the winner's cup unitl he beat the field in Saturdy night's
20 lapper on the one third mile track.
Last year Bugs won seven heat races and had four top five finishes
including one second place finish. He had already scored top fives in three in
the five races run this year and it was close, but no cigar, as he finished
second in the May 13th race at Manzanita.
Norbury, as is his style, used the high groove for much of the race but was
also capable of running the low side which helped him in his drive from the
third row. He finally chased down Jeff Perry and took the lead on the 12th
lap.
Chad Boat, the 14 year old son of Billy Boat the former Indy Car driver,
started on the inside of the second row, dropped back to fifth and then
changed his groove. He put it on top and drove back to second and was
challenging Norbury for the win when the checkered flag fell.
Perry, who entered the race as the only AMRA regular with a main event win,
came in third ahead of Lonnie Oliver and John Sarna. The rest of the top ten
were Stevie Sussex, Dustin Burkhart, C.J. Sarna, Mike Leslie and Robert Marfia.
Oliver won the first eight lap heat race with a wire to wire win over
Perry, Leslie, Marfia and Sussex. The second heat went to Boat, up from
fourth, John Sarna, Norbury and C.J. Sarna.
C.J. Sarna won his first ever trophy dash with a win over Burkhartm, Brian
Swinehart and Norbury.
The Midgets will again run the one third mile track in next week's Hank
Arnold Memorial
