SHERMAN CHALKS UP HIS 46TH ASCA MAIN EVENT WIN
by Windy McDonald

Phoenix, AZ (June 3) A yellow flag midway through the 25 lap Arizona Sprint Car Association main event on Manzanita Speedway's half mile track wiped out a three second lead that Charles Davis, Jr. had built and it proved to be his downfall as Jeremy Sherman overtook the USAC/CRA regular and took his sixth win of the year.

Sherman lined up in the seventh row and had moved into second three laps before the yellow which was due to a stalled car. Davis, who started in the front row, had built as much as a 4.45 second advantage until he began the lapping process and Sherman cut into the lead.

When the green flag fell for the restart Davis had two cars between him and Sherman. Sherman had to work to get by both cars and Davis had again pulled away. Jeremy relentlessly closed the gap and finally used a slide job on the 19th lap to move out front. Davis stayed close but trailed Sherman by 1.29 seconds at the checkered flag. Davis' team mate Josh Pelkey drove from his fourth row starting berth to finish third. R.J. Johnson drove from tenth to fourth in his first ride in the Fred Byran sprinter which was driven to 16 wins in 2005 by Sherman. J.T. Imperial drove his best race of the year as he was fifth at the checkered flag. Rounding out the top ten were Bob Ream, Jr., Mike Leslie, Andy Reinbold, Nathan High and Marty Miller.

Miller, the 2000 driving champion, had problems throughout the evening as his car failed him in the trophy dash and he could not start in his heat race. He did make it out for the semi main but again the car came to a halt on the track. His crew finally found the problem and barely made it out to the feature where Miller lined up in the 24th position. He was the hard charger of the race with his drive to tenth.

Mike Colegrove, the super rookie, entered the race ranked third in points but was the first car out when he caught the turn one wall on the second lap.

Sherman, who won his first ASCA race August 27, 1994 drove to the ASCA winner's circle for the 46th time. Of that total 31 have come in the past three and a half years.

Davis came out of the back row in the first heat and took the lead from Ream who was fighting handling problems and drovpped to third when Brandon Lane also slipped past. Reinbold earned the final main event spot as he edged Trey Deane for fourth. High battled rookie driver Dana Fite in the second heat and had the lead when he flashed under the checkered flag. Fite was second ahead of Johnson and Sherman. The third heat went to Pelkey who beat Chris Bonneau, Colegrove and Bernie Smith. Imperial, Leslie, Brian Hacker and Jeff Henry earned main event berths in the final heat.

Eleven cars were scheduled to run in the semi but Ryan Linder was unable to answer the call. Shon Deskins jumped out front and was still there when the race was called at the halfway point following a crash by Trey Deane and Miller dropped out just after the green flag following the accident. Mike Martin was black flagged when his pit crew held up the restart by remaining on the track while the field was being pushed off and Mike protested with a little strong language which sent him to the pits. He was the first alternate for the feature and made it into the 25 car field where he finished 15th.
