(May 6)
Different track, one different car, same results...That was the
scenario in the Arizona Sprint Car Association race Saturday night at Manzanita
Speedway. When the checked flag fell on the 25th lap of the feature race, this
time on the half mile track, Jeremy Sherman was in front and R.J. Johnson was
again in second just as he was last week. However he was not driving his usual
Bobby Martin owned sprint car.
DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN--ITS SHERMAN AND JOHNSON
Shortly before time to head to the track R.J. Johnson received a call from
Bill Sweeney,co-owner of the car driven by Marty Milller. Miller had injured his
back and R.J. was offered the ride and he quickly accepted.
The second straight one-two finish was different than last week when Sherman
took the lead from Johnson in the closing laps. This time Sherman started 12th
and wrested the lead from Mike Martin on the 10th lap. Meanwhile Johnson was
coming through the traffic after starting 14th. He climbed to third on the 15th
lap and took over second when Charles Davis, Jr. gave up the position when he
blew a rear end on the 17th lap.
Johnson stayed close to Sherman for a couple of laps but the 2005 champion
steadily pulled away and crossed the finish line 3.35 seconds ahead of R.J.
Bruce St. James started on the pole but Andy Reinbold had the lead at the end
of the first lap. He gave way to Martin on the fifth lap and dropped back. He
did not finish and was credited with 19th on the finish sheet. St. James also
dropped back and with seven laps to go he was running seventh. He found the
right groove and made a late race charge that carried him up to third. Mike
Leslie notched his second straight top five finish as he got passed Brandon Lane
for fourth. The rest of the top ten were Mike Martin, Bernie Smith, Shon Dekins,
Jeff Henry and Nathan High.
Fourteen year old Chad Boat outgunned the field in the 12 lap semi main and
flashed under the checkered flag a half lap in front. His run was fast enough to
put his name in the record book as he tripped the clock at 4:02.72, a tick of
the clock faster than the old mark of 4:02.95 which was set by Mike Leslie in
2004. Chad flipped in the feature and was scored last in the 24 car field. He
was not injured.
Reinbold won the first eight lap heat race with Josh Pelkey, Nathan High and
Brian Hacker taking the other main event transfer spots. Brandon Lane went wire
to wire in beating Shon Deskins, Mike Leslie and Johnson in the second heat. The
third heat went to Bernie Smith with Martin, Davis and Matthew Rossi in pursuit.
The final heat was a win for St. James with Henry edging Sherman for third and
Dana Fite took fourth
