Phoenix, AZ
(April 8) Jeremy
Sherman’s second straight Arizona Sprint Car Association win Saturday night
at Manzanita Speedway was overshadowed by one of the worst crashes in recent
history.
Bob
Ream, Jr., who had earlier won the trophy dash, and Nathan High made contact
while battling for the lead in the third heat race. Ream had taken the lead
into turn one and High tried the high side to regain first place. The two cars
made contact midway down the back straightaway of the one third mile track and
both cars got airborne and started flipping. Ream’s car did at least eight
flips and traveled about 150 feet before coming to rest against a light pole
in turn three of the half mile track. High’s sprinter also did a series of
flips. Both drivers climbed out of their destroyed cars and after being
checked over by the paramedics walked alway from the crash scene.
Sherman
lined up for the 25 lap feature on the outside of the back row,
chased down Jeff Henry and moved into the lead on the eleventh lap.
He then pulled away for the win
The
race for second had the fans attention as Bernie Smith was in the high groove
and Henry was running low. They traded positions on virtually every lap with
Henry beating Smith to the finish line for his best finish since his win on
May 14 of last year. Smith’s third place finish was his career best.
Josh
Pelkey came out of the seventh row to finish fourth, earning him the hard
charger of the race honors. Mike
Leslie had a great drive to get fifth. Leslie was involved in a lap 9 skirmish
that forced him to the pits. He made it out on the lead lap and made the
inside line work on his way toward the front. He made it all the way to second
but then dropped back to his fifth place finish.
Rounding
out the top ten were Matthew Rossi, Marty Miller, Andy Reinbold, Shon Deskins
and rookie driver Mike Colegrove who started 17th.
Smith
went wire to wire in the first heat race with Henry in second, Mike Martin
third and Thomas Ogle fourth. The second heat went to Sherman who started on
the pole but was hard pressed to beat Seanin Hendricsen to the checkered flag.
Marty Miller took third ahead of Chuck Buckman who started eighth. The final
heat went to Colegrove who inherited the lead when Ream and High crashed. Only
three cars were left running and the race was called with Rossi and John
Williams getting second and third.
