(April 1)
Jeremy Sherman got untracked
as the ASCA sprint cars journeyed out onto Manzanita Speedway’s half mile
track, perhaps encouraged at the prospect of taking home all the winnings. Jake,
owner of the #75 Sherman is driving this year, promised his driver that he would
reward him with 100% of the take should he win the main.
Chad
Boat had not only the fans’ attention in the first part of the feature but the
rest of the 24 drivers in the feature as well.
The 14 year old rookie was making his first start on the big track and
surprised the field as he led the first nine laps before giving way to Sherman
who had started in the third row.
Marty
Miller, the 2000 champion, went by Boat a couple of laps later and stayed with
Sherman throughout the remainder of the race. Traffic slowed Sherman in the
closing laps and Miller closed in and was a mere 0.68 seconds behind the winner.
Bob
Ream, Jr. made it a clean sweep for former champions with a strong run from 12th
to finish third. Chris Bonneau finished fourth and then came Boat who led all
rookies in fifth. Rounding out the top ten were the 1997 champion Josh Pelkey,
Nathan High, Thomas Ogle, Mike Leslie and J.T. Imperial.
Leslie
was the hard charger of the race with his run from 19th to 9th.
Mike Colegrove, another bright star in the rookie ranks,
also passed ten cars on his way from 23rd to 13th,
just behind Seainn Hendricsen.
The
half mile track was in top condition as Pelkey came out of the second row to top
the field in the first eight lap heat race. Sherman made a drive from eighth to
finish second with Hendricsen and Brandon Lane earning their way into the
feature with third and fourth place finishes.
Miller
was strong in the second heat with a run from the second row to take the win
over Brian Hacker, Imperial and Matthew Rossi. The third heat went to Mike
Martin who ran away from the rest of the field. He finished a straightaway ahead
of Ogle, High and Bernie Smith. The final heat went to Bonneau who posted a wire
to wire win over Boat who started fourth, Ream, up from fifth and Andy Reinbold
who lined up in the back row.
Eight
drivers transferred to the feature from the semi main. Shon Deskins led the
field to the checkered flag with Chuck Buckman in second and Colegrove was third
after starting 14th. Then came Leslie, Bret Mellenbrant, Jeff Henry,
Ryan Linder and rookie driver Dana Fite.
Sherman
beat Jay Ervine, Ream and Henry in the Arizona Race Mart trophy dash. Ream
increased his points lead and takes an unofficial 49 point edge over Pelkey into
next Saturday night’s races. Sherman vaulted from tenth to third, 63 points
back. The rest of the top ten in the unofficial standings are Miller, Bonneau,
Henricsen, High, Hacker, Martin and Boat.
