May 21, 2006…Perris
Auto Speedway will host the Fourth Annual Legends of Ascot Gala on October 21,
2006. Once again plans are underway
to honor another group of heroes from the Ascot years (1957-1990).
During this thirty-three year period, nearly every renowned racing figure
of that era attacked the Ascot clay. Approximately
ninety drivers, who challenged Ascot, were also starters in the Indianapolis
500. Add to that the number of
stock car racers, that parlayed their early beginnings at the Gardena oval to
national stock car championships and the gypsy motorcycle racers, ascending to
the AMA national tour, demonstrating their prowess on the two-wheel machines.
2006 will feature the following honorees:
Jack and Wilda Kindoll, long time CRA car owners, parts suppliers and
former CRA flagman. Ed Donovan, the man that brought drag racing technology to
sprint cars with the aluminum engine block.
Walt James, former CRA President and long time advocate for open wheel
racing. Jack Brunner, one of the
movers and shakers in establishing Ascot and a pretty fair race driver. Jimmy Oskie, the only five-time CRA champion and an ongoing
ambassador for sprint car racing. Wally
Pankratz, a veteran campaigner, aboard midgets, sprints, Silver Crown and Super-Modifieds,
who now operates a driving school to help the next generation of racers to
succeed. Lealand McSpadden, the
“Tempe Tornado”, famous at Ascot for his come from the back victories and
one of the true gentlemen in the sport of auto racing.
Al Unser Sr., who spent his formative years in sprinters, before going on
to four Indianapolis 500 victories and is now accumulating cars from his career
to fill his new museum in Albuquerque. Al
has served as a coach for a number of young racers with IRL.
Glen Howard will be presented the Lifetime Achievement
Award for his years of dedication to the sport.
Starting with the California Jalopy Association as a driver and later as
a CRA car owner. Glen was a
founding father with the SCRA and served several years as President.
He has operated So Cal Performance, providing parts, tires and fuel to
keep southern California racers on the track.
As the Legends festivities conclude, your ticket will then
admit you to the USAC/CRA sprint races in the evening, with two legendary
drivers aboard two legendary racecars, Parnelli Jones at the wheel of the Bromme
#1 “Little Red Sucker” and Al Unser at the controls of the Vel’s/Parnelli
Jones Viceroy Dirt Champ Car.
Tickets for this event will cost $45 each.
This will afford you a trek down memory lane, viewing a myriad of vintage
racecars. Once inside, a luncheon
will be served. While circulating
among the attendees and performing the required bench racing, there will be
opportunities for a chance on the raffle prizes and also auction items.
Finally, we will take time to honor this year’s “Legends”.
