September 17, 2006 – 2003 Lawrenceburg Speedway Sprint Car Track Champion, #21X Dickie Gaines,
returned to his dominating form at The Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday
night, capturing his first victory of the year at the 1/4 mile bullring.
Gaines, who doubled-up the hardware on the weekend after securing the win at
The Bloomington Speedway on Friday night, was followed to the checkers by
previous 2006 Lawrenceburg Speedway winner, #35S Hunter Schuerenberg,
hard chargers #49 Troy Link and #54 Matt Westfall and #14X Jon Stanbrough.
Gaines would start off the evening by capturing the victory in the 4th
heat race. Joining Gaines in heat race honors, were winners #320 Mike
Miller, #54 Matt Westfall, #14X Jon Stanbrough and #17X Jerry Ruble.
By winning his heat race, Gaines earned the opportunity to redraw for his
Feature starting position where he would pull the 3rd spot on the grid. At the
drop of the green flag, it was #320 of pole sitter Mike Miller that would get
the early jump, with the #35S of young Hunter Schuerenberg striking back to
own the point position by the end of the first circuit.
Schuerenberg would show the way as Miller attempted to gain the
lead while fending off another youngster, #17 Chris Windom. By lap 5, it
was a young gun shoot out, with teenagers Schuerenberg and Windom fighting
for position, slicing and dicing for the advantage. Shuerenberg would
continue to prevail, but by lap 9, veteran Dickie Gaines would be the source
of the methanol breathing on the Sikeston, Missouri youngster's bumper.
A dynamic battle would ensue, with Schuerenberg and Gaines wheel to
wheel, exchanging slide jobs and banzai tactics in their pursuit for the lead.
In front of a breathless crowd, the #21 of Gaines would take the front spot on
lap 11 with Schuerenberg retaliating in every corner and officially reclaiming
the scoring advantage at the flag stand on lap 14 after a brilliant run
through lapped traffic. Despite Schurenberg's valiant attempts, on this
night it would be age and experience to prevail, with Gaines celebrating a
Homecoming of sorts in the once very familiar Lawrenceburg Speedway Victory
Lane.
While Gaines and Schuerenberg tried stealing the spotlight, the #54
of Matt Westfall and the #49 of Troy Link were busy putting on their own show. Having
earned the opportunity to redraw after stellar heat race performances, Link
and Westfall would pull the least coveted of the redraw positions, the
9th and 10th spots on the grid. Despite their mid-pack starts, by lap 11, the
Ohioan Westfall would break into the top 5 and continued effort would have him
in the 3rd place position by lap 21. However, the most veteran of
all Sprint Car drivers in competition at The Lawrenceburg Speedway, Troy Link,
would have his own ideas in mind, as after making a slow and steady rise to
the front, Link would make a last lap relentless charge to pass both #14X Jon
Stanbrough and #54 Matt Westfall to steal the final podium finish.
