August 6, 2006....#3T Tony Beaber, captured his 2nd career Sprint Car
victory on Saturday night at The Lawrenceburg Speedway, after besting 2005
Lawrenceburg Speedway Sprint Car Track Champion, #26 Brandon Petty. Rounding
out the top 5, were #34 AJ Anderson, #77 Jason Knoke and #54 Matt Westfall.
The Petty/Beaber battle on track battle was reminiscent of many races
of decades past that were competed between Beabers own father, Ohio
and Pennsylvania hot shoe, Johnny Beaber, and champion driver, Jack Hewitt,
with The Beabers being infamous for rolling the bottom, and Petty taking a
page from the book of the King Of The Cushion, Jack Hewitt.
At the drop of the green flag, last week's winner, #3X Derek Franks, jumped to
the early lead, with #3T Beaber in hot pursuit. Meanwhile #26 Petty, who was
mounting his charge on the topside, would be aided by a lap 3 caution, which
on the restart enabled Petty to snatch 2nd place from Beaber. By lap 5 Petty
took the lead, with Beaber losing another spot to #77 Jason Knoke a short time
later. Beaber's fight of his life would escalate, as he would begin trying to
make up ground he had lost. As Petty continued to lead the field, side
by side, 2 and 3 wide action for the balance of the top 5 positions would be
the theme, with lapped traffic adding drama to the action.
Petty's Hewitt-esque cushion charge would continue as Beaber fought
through the field on the bottom, getting back around Knoke and front runner,
Derek Franks, to put himself back in the 2nd spot. On the white flag
lap, Petty and Beaber would be two wide in their very distinct grooves, as
lapped traffic blocked their view of the checkered in turn 3. Using the
extreme low line that has made the Beaber name famous, Tony Beaber snatched
the win from Petty on the last corner of the final lap in one of the most
memorable and exciting finishes on record at The Lawrenceburg Speedway.
A jubilant, yet overwhelmed, Tony Beaber remarked after the race,
"They say you never forget your first win, I imagine that is true, but
for me, this second one I'm not going to forget either. There at the
beginning, I just could not catch a break. When cars started passing me,
I don't want to say I gave up, but it sure is a lot tougher to imagine winning
the thing when you are going backwards. I tried to refocus and found the right
rhythm on the bottom, and with a few laps to go, particularly when lapped
traffic came into play, I realized that I wasn't out of the hunt just yet.
Man, when I came off of turn 4 on the last lap, I moved up to the top a bit
and I just KNEW I'd see Petty's nose duck back under me. When I didn't
and I crossed the finish line, I was nearly in shock. I'm just really thankful
to my car owner, Alan Toth for sticking by me, and to be able to be a part of
what had to be a really exciting show for the fans makes me really proud and
super happy. Man this feels good!"
Beaber's win increases his Championship points standing, giving him a
substantial advantage for The Lawrenceburg Speedway Track Championship going
into the final stretch of the season. Catch Tony Beaber and the rest of
