April 24, 2006 – After last weekend's victory in a shoot out with Dickie
Gaines, 2003 Lawrenceburg Speedway Track Champion, Jon Stanbrough parlayed his
effort, capturing the win on Saturday night from his 15th place starting
position during The United States Auto Club's (USAC) contest during The
Lawrenceburg Sprint Nationals Weekend.
Stanbrough, who is no stranger to the historical high
banked 1/4 mile oval of Lawrenceburg Speedway, would start off his night by
qualifying in the 15th position, turning a lap time of 12.980 in his Fox
Brothers #53 DRC machine. Jon would take home the final transfer
position in heat race #3, earning a spot in the Feature Event to be run in
front of a packed house on hand, for what was to be the second leg of The
Lawrenceburg Sprint Nationals Weekend.
With heavy hitters, Jay Drake and Josh Wise comprising the
front row of the feature, and the second row belonging to Lawrenceburg
Speedway veterans and multi-feature winners, Brandon Petty and Matt Westfall,
thoughts of Stanbrough repeating his successes from the week prior at The
Lawrenceburg Speedway were slim, considering Jon's 15th place start
on the grid.
At the drop of the green flag, Jay Drake, the 2004 USAC
Sprint Car National Champion, would jump to the lead in his BWB Racing #62
machine. Drake would hold of challenges from the 2B Racing #2B pilot,
Bud Kaeding, and The Edison Motorsports entry #10c of Indiana hot shoe, Shane
Cottle. All eyes were on the dog fight up front, with the leaders
slicing and dicing in two and three wide action, so many would not notice the
calculated charge being mounted by Stanbrough from his back end starting
position.
On lap 12, Shane Cottle would make the inside lane work,
driving his #10c mere inches from the infield tire markers to take the lead
from Drake in The USAC event. Bud Kaeding would give Shane an action
packed challenge, making the middle laps of the 30 lap Feature some of
the most memorable in racing history, with the duo duking it out in front of
the excited crowd.
With a hand full of laps to go, a yellow flag came out,
allowing those who had been watching the battle up front to take notice of Jon
Stanbrough, who had picked off 10+ positions, allowing him to line up
right on the leaders after the caution. When the race resumed, Kaeding,
who had overtaken Cottle on lap 24, lead the field into the final circuits.
Mixing it up in the concluding laps, Kaeding, Cottle, Drake and Stanbrough
would continue their side by side, back and forth duel to the delight of
spectators. Stanbrough, using every part of the race track, would put
The Fox Brothers #53, within striking distance of leader Bud Kaeding on the
white flag lap.
In unforgettable fashion, Stanbrough would take the lead
from Kaeding on the final lap, crossing the checkered as the winner of The
USAC National Sprint Car Feature Event of The Lawrenceburg Sprint Nationals.
An exhausted, an obviously emotional Stanbrough, would comment in Victory Lane
that the late race caution helped to put him in the position to win the
event.
Jon Stanbrough, nick-named "The Silent Gasser",
has been anything but quiet at The Lawrenceburg Speedway in 2006, finding
himself 2 for 2 in victories, and holding the title as the
current Lawrenceburg Speedway Sprint Car points leader. With the racing
action in the opening weeks at Lawrenceburg Speedway being some of the best in
history, the 2006 season is promising to be the best year ever for
Lawrenceburg Speedway.
Lawrenceburg Speedway Promoter, Tom Wieck, commented,
"I just can't say enough about these Sprint Car guys in the first 2 weeks
of the season at Lawrenceburg Speedway. They have put on one heck of a
show for the fans, I'm not sure I've ever seen anything quite like it. I've
got to take my hat off to these fantastic drivers this year, the racing
action has been fair, safe and absolutely incredible. These guys have
proved 2 weeks in a row why Sprint Car racing in Indiana is second to none.
The saturation of talented Sprint Car drivers in this area is positively
un-matched. I'm just really thankful these drivers have chosen
Lawrenceburg Speedway and our fans to be the ones they entertain and
amaze."
