(Chico, CA 10-14-06)...Bring out the brooms in Chico as Terry Schank Jr.
finished off the 2006 racing season at John Padjen's Silver Dollar Speedway with
a decisive 40-lap main event win on Saturday night. Schank Jr. won the 20-lap
main event the night before giving him and car owner's Matt Fontaine and Megan
Fisher a clean sweep for the weekend. Fontaine and Fisher are no strangers to
victory lane as the same car won
last year's event also with Herman Klein as the driver. The team won the $2500
payday and took home the winner's trophy. A total of 51 drivers returned for the
final night of the 2^nd Annual Non Wing Sprint Nationals at Chico.
The main event started with Bob Newberry taking the early lead. Newberry had a
dream season at Chico this year and dominated the point championship. On lap two
the yellow was needed when Nick Green's motor went up in smoke. Also spinning
out was Justin Funkhouser in turn four. Under the yellow Darrell Hanestad went
to the work area with rear end problems. He and another car made contact. He did
not return to the race. Unfortunately both nights ended with one of the best
watching the main event as a spectator. On lap 7, Schank Jr. moved into the
second spot when he passed Doug Brewer. He went to work on Newberry the leader
and on lap 11 drove by for the lead. On lap 19 a yellow was needed when Randy
Lathrop stopped in turn three.
Schank Jr. continued to lead while Newberry was second and Brewer third. Behind
them things were heating up between Steve Stein, B.J. Martin, Sparky Howard and
Jason York. This battle produced some of the best racing all weekend. Up front
Schank Jr. was the class of the field. He moved through slower traffic a little
better than Newberry and it proved to be the deciding factor. A late caution was
needed that set up a two lap dash to the end. But as with most of the race
Schank Jr. was quicker than Newberry and won the race. Schank Jr. is a man with
few words when it comes to post race interviews but he did manage to say,
“That was a long race, I had never done a 40-lapper and during the cautions I
had to peel my head away from the head rest. I just have to thank Matt and
Megan and everyone who has helped out with this car this season.” Newberry was
happy with second and overall he had a tremendous year. Newberry said, “It's
just been fun coming up to Chico all year and racing. I have to thank all my
family, sponsors and friends who helped me out this year.” Doug Brewer
finished third and said, “I love coming
to Chico and tonight we had fun out here, I wasn't as good as the top two guys
but I'll take third and look forward to coming back next year.”
Matt Streeter dominated the 20-lap B main event. At one point he was a half lap
ahead of second place Jay Youngman. Streeter led all 20 laps to get the
convincing win. Youngman finished second. Justin Funkhouser took home third
place honors. Jerry Cisco finished in the fourth spot. Because Damion Gardner's
team was unable to replace his blown motor from Friday night, Gardner was a
scratch from the Saturday night main event which he had qualified for. That left
one more transfer spot available and it went to David Press. Press wound up
finishing eighth in the main event, passing 12 cars to get the top ten finish.
Finishing one spot out was Taylor Simas who needs to be commended for his drive.
Simas started in the last row of the D main event. From there he transferred out
of the D, into the C main. Started 16th and finished second. In the B he lined
up tenth and finished sixth, one spot out. All in all he passed a total of 29
cars throughout the night.
Jimmy Steward led all 15 laps to win the C main event. Taylor Simas was second.
The night started off with the D main event. Young gun Timmy Sherman Jr. led all
12 laps to get the win. Simas was second and earned the final transfer spot.
