CHICO, CA (10-13-06) - Santa Rosa driver Terry Schank Jr. won the opening
night 20-lap invitational main event Friday night at Silver Dollar Speedway in
Chico. Schank Jr. led the final 5 laps to win the $1,000 payday. A total of 63
drivers competed during night one of the 2nd Annual Wingless Nationals at Chico.
The night featured qualifying, heat races, two dashes, a non-qualifiers main and
the invitational 20-lap main event.
The main featured the 20 fastest qualifiers available to race. Four drivers
who qualified in the top 20 but were not able to start because of mechanical
issues included Damion Gardner, Kevin Lovell, Billy Wallace and Herman Klein.
The race started with Darrell Hanestad and Matt Streeter banging wheels on the
front row. Hanestad took the lead while Streeter drifted to third. Schank Jr.
moved into second. The race ran 15 laps non-stop until a red changed the whole
outcome of the main event. Nick Green and Jim Perry III flipped off turn one and
two to bring out the red and the only stoppage of the night during the main
event. While that was happening Jason York lost power going down the back
stretch and he was done for the night. Somewhere on the this lap the leader,
Hanestad, suffered damage to his front end. During the red an official reported
that Hanestad was out of his car and done for the night. A tow truck took
Hanestad's car back to the trailer.
When the race resumed Schank Jr. was the leader. He went on to lead the final
five laps without a serious challenge. He looked strong in the
www.theskipperpartys.net /Matt and Megan Fontaine #2x. Streeter finished second
in the Mark Orth owned #24. Third went to Steve Stein out of Davis. Brentwood
driver Bob Newberry scored the fourth place finish. Teenager Justin Funkhouser
rounded out the top five.
Two individual seven lap dashes were run that would determine the inside and
outside rows for the next night's main events. Winning dash one and starting
from the pole on Saturday night is Bob Newberry. Winning dash two and starting
outside the front row will be Doug Brewer. Two cars locked into the dash were
unable to start because of motor problems. They were Damion Gardner and Kevin
Lovell.
Jim Perry Jr. came from the sixth row to win the 10-lap non qualifiers main
event. Finishing second was Derek Overkamp. By finishing in the top two, each
driver earned a transfer spot into the B main event on Saturday night.
T.C. Miller led all 10 laps to win heat one. Doug Brewer started on the pole
of heat two and lead all ten laps to win the race. B.J. Martin took the lead in
heat three and held on for the win. Steve Stein started in row three of heat
four but ended up winning the race.
Heat race two saw a frightening flip involving Herman Klein who catapulted
off turn three and didn't stop until the catch fence separating the pits and the
bicycle track. He was uninjured but the car was scratched for the rest of the
night.
Hanestad turned the fastest lap of the night in qualifying. His time was a
14.225. During qualifying, seven drivers where too loud and it hampered them the
rest of the night. Damion Gardner was second quick followed by Streeter, Schank
Jr. and Stein. Jimmy Sills came out from behind the teachers box and qualified
sixth fastest.
