– August 14, 2006...Saturday night will mark one of the most popular
nights of racing at Placerville Speedway as the Mountain Democrat Newspaper
presents “Kids Night” at the
El dorado
County
Fairground. On this special night the full time adult race drivers step out of
the limelight for a big evening that allows area youngsters to see what its
like on the other side of the fence, competing in bicycle races during
intermission for ribbons and trophies.
Assisted by many of the drivers in which they idolize, children of
various ages will compete on the track surface in a number of events by age
group. The top three finishers in each race are awarded trophies and everyone
in competition is presented a participation ribbon. Distribution of the prizes
is performed by a number of race drivers who support this annual family affair
with big smiles year after year.
Once the bicycle competitions conclude, a drawing for a brand new BMX
Bicycle will be held and one lucky youngster will go home with a new two
wheeled ride. The raffle is open to all children in attendance to the speedway
regardless if they take part in the racing or not.
For the third consecutive year,
Saturday’s event will be sponsored by the Mountain Democrat Newspaper. The
Mountain Democrat is one of
California
’s oldest newspapers and has been the leading news source in
El Dorado
County
since 1944. Published four times a week, the newspaper continues to provide
quality coverage of local supports, especially the auto racing at Placerville
Speedway.
“We appreciate the great news coverage
the Mountain Democrat provides us with each year, its something this sport
depends on to continue,” said track promoter John Padjen. “It’s a
pleasure to have them sponsor this special race each year, this night is a
real great night for families to attend the races.”
In addition to the grand prize that will
be awarded by representatives from the newspaper, youngsters will be receiving
various goodies from the time they arrive at the speedway. All children under
the age of 12 will be admitted for free with an adult and receive a coupon for
complimentary popcorn and soda. Additionally, the Placerville Police Officers
Association will be on hand, awarding each child in attendance a complimentary
ticket to the 33rd Annual Hangtown Destuction Derby that takes
place the next day at the speedway, a gift worth $5.
“We love making the derby part of kids
night,” said Ron Cannon of the Placerville Police Department.
“Participating with the speedway the night before our derby has proved very
successful for us the past two years and we thank John Padjen Motorsports for
having us participate.”
Cannon is one of the many competitors in
Sunday’s derby and will be among a a handful of competitors displaying their
cars at the speedway Saturday night before the racing begins.
While the little people will steal much
of the show on Saturday night, the racing of the four wheeled nature is sure
to be heated as well with Pacific Sprints, Pro Stocks and Pure Stocks all
competing in another round of the El Dorado County New Car Dealers
Championship season.
The evening will include qualifying for
the sprint cars followed by eight lap heat races for all three divisions.
Preliminary main events and full feature events that will wrap up the action
packed evening. The grandstands will open at
5 p.m.
on Saturday with qualifying beginning at
6:30
followed by racing at 7.
A secure area will be available for the
children’s bicycles to be stored prior to intermission. Adult tickets are
$11, juniors and seniors are $9 and all children 11 and under are free on this
special night. An early arrival to the speedway is suggested as seating
routinely becomes limited on this night.
