CHICO, CA (6-30-06) - Paradise driver Justin Funkhouser is becoming quite
familiar with the front stretch at Silver Dollar Speedway. For the second time
this year the teenager parked his family owned #5f in victory lane after a hard
fought non-wing sprint car win. He held off a charging Bob Newberry, who started
ninth. Funkhouser led the 20-car starting field to the green flag. He beat
fellow front row starter Nick Green into turn one. It was Green's first start on
dirt while driving an open wheel sprint car. Green is the son of sprint car
champion Tim Green. R.C. Smith moved into the second spot and drove hard to
chase Funkhouser. Smith ultimately finished a season best third place. Charlie
Marrs finished fourth, a season best for the Joe Hunt Magnetos #7. Joe Hunt
Magnetos is the title sponsor of the series this year at Chico Placerville. B.J.
Martin finished in fifth. A total of 32 non-wing sprint cars entered John
Padjen's Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday Night.
Bob Newberry started sixth in heat one but in just eight laps he captured the
win. Pole sitter R.C. Smith won heat two. Last Friday nights winner Taylor Simas
won heat three. John Anderson led all eight laps to win heat four.
David Press won the 10-lap B main event. Doug Brewer, Dennis Frasier and
Sparky Howard all transferred into the main event.
