PLACERVILLE
, CA – In the Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint cars Darrell Hanestead of
Clayton took the lead from pole sitter Dave Hays Jr. on the fourth lap of the
race. Once in front, the former winged racing star ruled the event out in
front. Herman Klein of
Sacramento
charged through the field in his Matt Fontain owned wingless ride that won the
Wingless Nationals last fall. Klein started fifth and finished in second place
ahead of series point leader Bob Newberry of
Antioch
. Matt Streeter finished in fourth ahead of
Sacramento
’s Steve Stein.
The 20 lap feature went under red flag conditions on the 12th
lap when Nathan Johnson of
Corning
took a wild tumble in the second turn. Johnson flipped over several times
before coming to rest on the track. He was uninjured in the event. A total of
24 wingless cars were in competition Saturday night.
Placerville Speedway will go dark next weekend to allow for the
Memorial Day events at Silver Dollar Speedway in
Chico
. The next race at the El Dorado County Fairground will be Saturday, June 3
with the return of the Golden State Challenge Series sprint cars that will be
making their second and final appearance of the season here. Further
