Haubstadt,
IN (July 15, 2006).
Jon Stanbrough of Jamestown, IN, won the 30 lap USAC Sprint Car feature
Saturday night at Tri-State Speedway to become the third different winner in the
first three nights of racing at Indiana dirt tracks during USAC Indiana Sprint
Week. Stanbrough was the third
fastest qualifier of 41 entrants and started fifth in a talented field of 23
sprint car drivers that made the feature.
The win was a career fifth for the annual weeklong series for Stanbrough.
The Fox Brothers’ DRC he drove was fast.
The racetrack was receptive. The
crowd was entusiastic! And the
winner was emotional in the post race interview.
“Brad and Steve Fox take care of the car and build the motor.
I could choose to go wherever I needed to go!
I have been close here so many times and other times not even close.
I am so happy to get these fellows to the winner’s circle.”
Stanbrough began his forward venture on lap 12 when he took fourth from
Kyle Cummins. Stanbrough swished by
Dave Darland on lap 15. Jerry Coons was next on the horizon and another two-lap task.
That left only one major challenge.
2005 USAC Champion Levi Jones had led from the initial green flag in the
Tony Stewart owned Mopar. On lap 22
Jones momentarily left a little racing space and Stanbrough shot underneath and
into the lead. Bryan Clauson would
soon follow and claim second with 5 laps to go.
Jones finished third followed by Jerry Coons and Corey Kruseman.
The second five included Brad Sweet, Darren Hagen, Dave Darland, Dickie
Gaines, and Brady Short. Kyle
Cummins, who had won the Semi, finished eleventh with Shane Cottle twelfth.
Cottle had marched up to sixth before using evasive action and taking a
wild bronco twisting ride through infield and back into the thick competition.
The frantic pace of the feature race was interrupted just 4 times.
Yellows and one red broke the event up into hectic green flag dashes of
less than 10 laps each. The
only red flag was needed on lap 23 after Californian Damion Gardner rolled his
sprinter in turn three. A lap 14
incident involved three spinning cars including one driven by Mat Neely.
Neely entered the event with the Indiana Sprint Week point lead.
He had won the first night out and was second in the main on night two.
But on Saturday night he would need to use a provisional starting spot to
start at the back of the feature field. He
was fifth in his heat after tangling with Jeff Davis.
The contact sent Davis’ car into the wall and upside down.
Neely was seventh in the 12 lap Semi with the top six all that would transfer
to the feature. With absolute
resolve Neely continued and would finish the feature.
The USAC Sprint Car contingency moved on to compete at Kokomo Speedway
Sunday night. Tri-State Speedway
will host the Hoosier Tire MSCS Sprints for the second annual Hoosier Sprint
Nationals on Saturday night July 29th.
The Hoosier Sprint Nationals pays $10,000 to win a fifty lap feature.
